Dr. McKenna is definitely eccentric but a great choice for Ideas. She brings a lot of personality to the subjects. She incorporates films into the curriculum which makes it far more interesting. Overall not too difficult, but there definitely are a lot of papers (but less reading than other professors). She is very kind and personable!

Dr. McKenna is a good choice for 201H. She's nice and has a genuine passion for teaching. Her personality is quirky, but she loves getting to know her students. Weekly prompts/essays, a group project, and a final paper. Interesting movies for assignments and not too much reading. Not an easy A, but you'll do well if you put in the effort.

Her teaching style is bit on the wild side... but she makes the class very fun and interesting. She genuinely wants her students to do well, and makes you work for the A (pretty easy to at least get an A- on most assignments, getting an A requires a little extra edge to your work). Would definitely take again!

Dr. Mckenna is a hilarious professor and really tries to get to know her students. She wants her students to do well and enjoys listening to what her students have to say about the topics discussed in class.

She is definitely a character! Super off the walls with her teaching style and very sporadic in her thoughts. Easy class, but she is a little kooky. Be prepared.

Susan is the best, so entertaining. The class was fairly difficult, as virtually the entire grade is the 4 papers throughout the semester, but she's a more than fair grader. And I got by the entire semester without reading most of the assigned text.

Professor McKenna is a very sweet, funny lady. I often found myself laughing hysterically in her class. She is very helpful and completely clear in her expectations - she even lays out exactly how she wants your (few) essays structured. Very easy class, minimal work. We often watched movies, and she picks great material. Best professor for 291A.

Love, love, love this professor! She's so quirky; it's endearing. Our honors class was just about the only one that centered around films and not books, which was amazing. A lot easier to be interested. McKenna is really a unique professor, and I highly recommend her for this class.

McKenna picks interesting material for class, so discussions are usually good. Class is easy, and I didn't have to buy any of the books - we mostly just watched movies. She occasionally speaks without thinking and will thus accidentally make uncomfortable comments. Overall, very sweet and well-meaning.

Took American Portraits with her, I loved the class. Watched great movies, and often spent a week discussing in small groups. Only have to write a few papers, and she grades easily. She is great on a good day, and a complete terror on bad days. Learned a lot in this class.

Susan is unique and interesting. A very funny person. Amazing course. Not like all the same old profs. We did different types of work, not just writing reflections. She let us contribute to the readings, let up help choose films, we got to bring in our own pop culture to show the class. She was willing to help but cut slack when needed.

Prof McKenna is extremely energetic, smart, funny, and entertaining. She cares about you and your papers. You will work hard but have new understanding of challenging material. She pushes you, but fair in grading. I learned a lot, would recommend without a doubt. Not same thing you get in other classes with someone just talking at you.

The class was eye opening. Challenging. You will learn to think things through. Professor took more of an interest in me than any other. Expects you to work but will work with you on communicating what you want to say. The students produced awesome Capstones! Take this if you are interested in becoming a better thinker!

Susan was one of the best prof. I've had. The class was very thought provoking. she creates a very open classroom and encourages disagreement with her own ideas. The readings are from many areas and she makes you think, the films are fascinating. I wrote the best paper I've ever written. You cannot just coast in this class, but it was worth it.

Her pop culture class was one of the most fun and interesting classes I took in my four years at UMass. My final project: a 30-page analysis on Eminem's place in society.
