Comment:

Strauber is an excellent prof. her lectures are interesting and she constructs the course well. She is a hard grader, esp. to someone who is new to the discipline but her comments are usually constructive. She is really nice so go talk to her if you're having trouble!

Comment:

It seems that people either love or hate Prof. Strauber. I personally love her and actually plan to declare with her. I think the "unfairness" is just her expecting quite a bit from her students, even in an intro. I never found her grades unfair, and she was always willing to discuss papers and explain her reasoning.

I've had Susan for 103, 221, 222, and a summer MAP. She is also my advisor. Susan is an excellent professorâ€"unarguably the best in the department. She delivers tight, intelligent lectures and keeps inane discussion to a minimum. She has high standards for papers & exams though and no flexibility w/ regard to deadlines.

If you have a passion for the subject, then she can be a good match. Her patience with my idiocy was admirable, I was allowed to rewrite my paper twice! The impressionism course was more interesting, as it was more focused. Still, I found it hard to learn how to write the way she wanted things written.

She was teaching 3 intro classes when I took her class, and that could be part of it..but like others have said, I also thought she graded unfairly, especially for intro. and..boring. but that's the nature of the course, no matter who you take it with.

I'm surprised by the mean comments here. I thought she was an awesome prof, very articulate in class and assigned great readings. [I don't think I was a favorite either.] She definitely made us work hard, but was consistent & fair.

Susan Strauber is, without a doubt, the worst professor I have encountered at Grinnell. Not only does she expend the least amount of energy possible to grade papers, but her grammar 'corrections' are usually wrong. Her assigned readings are atrocious.

I’m going to have to disagree with the rest here. Though she can be a bit strict (she is a very difficult paper grader, esp. toward grammer and she doesn’t tolerate B.S. in class) this IS college, you should be able to write and not gossip during class.
