Dr. Heffernan is a great prof. She's crazy smart and really passionate about the material. She has a lot of great stories that go with the incredible readings she selects. There are a lot of readings, but it's an English seminar class so what do you expect. Ask her about her research involving cyborgs/AI's to get on her good side fast.

I can't express how much I didn't want to do Lit Theory but Dr. Heffernan managed to make the course so well constructed and intense that I actually really enjoyed it. She is extremely positive and accommodating. She made the class a comfortable environment to discuss and debate. This class however is HARD. Do not take it unless you mean business.

Not a bad prof, but not particularly good either. Has a difficult time getting sentences out sometimes, she appears to have a little stuttering problem. She assigns a lot of reading and expects the students to read it in a short amount of time. Extremely difficult marker. Does not use smuport or slides. Very one sided with her opinions.

I had her for History & Theory of Novel I and she was awful. The assignments were easy, the material could have been interesting, but her lectures were so boring. Very scatterbrained and never seemed to know what she was trying to say. She had a tendency to ask questions and then cut students off and dismiss ideas that differed from hers.

Awesome and Brilliant. With 6 required texts, she definitely made us work, and every sleepless night was worth it because the class was critical, engaged, and really trying to go beyond the surface of the material we were covering. Dr. Heffernan challenged us all yet was endlessly helpful at the same time.

I've had her for two separate courses, two separate levels, and I loved her. Very intelligent and her lessons are extremely enlightening. Honestly-it all depends on the work you put into it. English should not be just "easy electives". If you put the work in, you def. see it back. She is really helpful and understanding as well- just talk to her!

TAKE THIS CLASS! Don't be lazy and then complain about the teacher....If you really want to learn something, then you should take this course. I found her so inspiring as a woman, a teacher, and as feminist. She is kind and very understanding. Her subjects are extremely interesting --history of feminism and I would take her again in a second.

Unless you have a fantastic grasp on post-modernism, art history, or an I.Q hovering around 147, then DO NO take her. I had her for a 2nd year Undergraduate Course and she taught as if this was my 7th year in a graduate school. She is so frustrating, she will turn you off of learning and academics. Be Warned, I wish I had been.

I dont think she has any idea what she is talking about. She tried to turn the class into philosophy but she didn't understand the concepts she was trying to teach. She seems to be obsessed with feminism. Her seeing phallic symbols in everything would probably be funny if she had a personality.

She did not make any sense at all at all even though I have an english major. I stopped going to class in the class term because it was a waste of time. Then she started trying to tell me how bad of a student I was when in fact I have very high grades. She just can 't face the fact she should do something rather then teaching.

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE!!! It is so boring and it was like having teeth pulled. She does not teach what you would expect to be taught in that class. Stay away its like she is teaching a master's class not a second year class. I was happy to see she wasn't there last year but angry when she was back. She is not kind to the students.

The worst prof I have ever had at SMU by far. She is supposed to teach English, not philosophy, not art history, and I don't think she realizes that. This is only a 2nd year class, and there was more of a work-load than all of my 4th year classes. She was mean when you didn't understand, and actually told off a classmate who left class 5 mins early

One of the most knowledgeable profs i have ever had. It is true that she doesn't realize most students aren't at her level. Still...highly recommended if you want to think, especially her course on postmodern lit.

she is good, knows what she is doing. however, most of the students are not at her level, so the class never really understands the material. she is also a very hard marker.
