Dr. Harpold is the best professor in the entire English department, hands down. He is extremely intelligent, and wants his students to truly understand the material on a new level. He is not easy, so I recommend you pay attention to his lectures and take good notes. However, if you actually engage with him mentally in the subject, he's the best. A+

I learned a lot in this class, not only about science fiction novels but about writing the best essay possible. The feedback you get back on essays is very detailed. He expects a lot from the students, but rightfully because of the detail he puts into lectures and descriptions of assignments. Your grade depends on your effort.

Dr. Harpold's classes remind me why it is important to pursue a career in the humanities. His lectures are dense and verbose, but he lays out clearly what is expected of you in the class and on the exams. TAKE NOTES!! One of my favorite professors of all time and I am taking his class again in the fall.

Professor Harpold is one of the best I've ever had. He's genuinely a nice guy, and gives entertaining lectures. He really cares about his students and the material. Office hours help a lot with comprehension and getting prepared for the midterm. 10/10 recommend.

Dr. Harpold is one of the best professors I've taken at UF. He is definitely not an easy professor, but if you actually mentally engage with him during class, pay attention, and take notes, you'll do well. Extremely interesting and nice guy; great teacher.

Dr. Harpold is an amazing professor. He delves into the material and really explores author intention along with reader interpretation. Hes extremely intelligent and has a large vocabulary, however if you pay attention his lectures are really great.

SO PARTICULAR. He's very nice and very intelligent, but SO PARTICULAR. Left me over 250+ comments on my paper about word choice alone. I was so frustrated with his grading, I took it to another English prof who said my paper was fine and Harpold graded it based on his opinion, not quality. Also, prepare for a lot of liberal discourse.

Very nitpicky. Unclear prompts - both extremely verbose and unnecessarily complicated (i.e. not at all straightforward). 'Harsh grader' is an understatement. He will literally take off points for any reason he feels like. I really regret taking this class! 18 credits and this is the class I am struggling with.

Harpold is no push-over, but he'll guide you through the material like a lighthouse, encouraging you along the way. The classroom was extremely condensed, which was a shame; the course would've been amazing had it been taught seminar style. He's like an organic encyclopedia, and knows literally, no joke, LITERALLY, everything science/humanities.

Professor Harpold is the best professor I have had at UF. He is so passionate about what he teaches and what he speaks about and his lectures are completely amazing. Lots of reading but definitely worth it. I would suggest reading portions of each of the texts before the semester begins so you don't have to read the whole book in one week.

The best professor I have had at UF. Truly and passionately cares about the subject matter, his students, and the broader educational aspects of his teachings. Take any class he teaches--you will be fascinated and intrigued. He is a tough grader on essays, but work hard, ask questions, and you will be fine!

Prof. Harpold is very engaging, making the class vividly interesting. He is a tough grader, but those professors are the ones that help you with your writing. Sure, paratexts is a small field of study, but to say it is unimportant or useless is misguided. I would recommend this teacher if you are open to learning from him.

I took paratexts with him and really enjoyed it (I probably would not have with any other professor). He is ridiculously intelligent and really cares about his students, although he is a really difficult grader (although there IS a curve). Use his office hours all the time and you will get a lot out of it.

nice guy, but the class has no substance, like literally the subject of "paratexts" is barely considered by academic people.. but also do not think it's an easy A, it is reading and writing intensive, on weird useless topics. attendance policy strict, tough grader, essay prompts are very abstract if you like that sort of thing, not my cup of tea

upbeat guy, pretty hot professor, interesting dude, but most of the stuff done in this class feels pointless; the entire subject of paratexts is seemingly useless. very tough grader, and you dont get anything back until november, so u don't really know where u stand. and grade on midterm WILL be lower than you xpectd, but u can improve on final

I had no experience with Verne before and by the end I loathed the novels, despite the lectures. He makes the material pretty interesting, but I just could NOT get into Verne... sooo dull. Reading quizzes tend to be difficult, and the final essays were hard. He's NOT a holistic grader. I liked him a lot as a person but not so much as a prof.

LOVED taking his Verne class. He does talk a lot (but he KNOWS what he's talking about), & he always let's people participate. The reading quizzes are easy (& I admit that sometimes I only read the last bit of the book for the quiz), but a full understanding of the book is required for essays. Using outside sources isn't required, but recommended!

Harpold is an incredibly engaging lecturer. Class will be entertaining, more so than a few of the novels. Fair grader on essays. Gives detailed questions and tells you how to succeed. The reading quizzes are not fun. Acing them may not be doable unless your memory is excellent. Don't fret, Harpold makes it possible to do well if you do the readings

Honestly a professor of Ivy-league quality - his lectures, though sometimes abstract, are mindblowing if you can manage to understand his immense vocabulary. Not an easy A but if you do all the readings and take an engaged interest in class, you'll do fine - I've taken 4 of his classes. ALSO a bonus - not only a TOTAL stud, but he can bake too!

Literary Spaces was one of my favorite classes. At first he can seem intimidating, because he is so BRILLIANT. But if you can hang in there when you feel lost and go to office hours, you will leave this class with your mind expanded. He is also the HOTTEST professor in the world. He has the three B's: Brains, Beauty, and Brilliance. Take him!!!
