Fantastic lecturer. He has immense amounts of experience in the art world and really knows what he's talking about, and he makes these artworks come alive with his explanations. Highly highly recommended, not at all a difficult class and will really open your eyes to a world of art out there.

(The comment below this was the first part of the comment) The grades are based off of going to a few museums, memorizing some slides, and writing one paper on one of the artworks. I never picked up the book, was conscious in lecture 40% of the time, bought the notes from notehall, and studied some slides and I got an A. Very easy class.

This was a very interesting and easy class. I frequently fell asleep in class when I was there. It?s not necessary to go to lecture all the time, but it is necessary to go to recitation since the TAs do all the grading. (continues below)

I had some trouble with this class at first but after buckling down at studying it was really easy. Take advantage of the website and the TA's recitation classes, Miguel Rojas is an awesome TA! You can get decent grades in this class if you try.

Smith is huge in the contemporary art world but I wasn't a fan. He's very knowledgable but that doesn't mean anything to uninformed freshmen who just want an A. Thankfullyl the TA's are good for something. Going to class isn't really necessary, just memorize the slides and know what to say for th

Very intelligent and knowledgable. You will definitely learn things you didn't know before in lecture, but attending lecture definitely isn't necessary to ace the course. Recitations and museum visits are. Lectures supplement recitations instead of the other way around. Great TAs- Travis and Jessica

He's very knowledgable but his accent makes it hard to understand. you do after a while, though. class is pointless - anything you need to know is on his website. The reading is unnecessary and a waste of time. Go to recitation, the museums, and the website then it's a cake class.

Really smart guy, but... lecture is generally pretty boring, he spends waaayyy too much time on aboriginal art and the all black canvases art and he is incredibly arrogant

if you sit in the front for his lectures, you can understand him perfectly. granted, the lecture material won't always be on the test, but the lectures themselves are usually interesting - with the exception of the aborigional art. ::yawn::

He was alright, fairly interesting - spent way too much time on that aboriginal art though. Also, the tests had nothing to do with the lectures so it kind of felt like a waste of time going after a while.
