DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you need a comm credit take literally any class but this one. None of the movies were enjoyable - but I may be a bit biased because I'm under 50. His tests are very hard unless you watch the movies. Only reason I passed this class was because someone started a group me and added study guides for the whole class.

Great professor. Take this class seriously, and you will be fine. Definitely not a blowoff class or easy A, but if you study like any other class you can definitely get an A. His tests are multiple choice and his pop quizzes are short answer.

I took Dr. Frentz for Sci-fi film as an elective. Do the reading, be prepared for the quizzes and you shouldn't have an issue. Three papers, 2 tests and weekly quizzes are all of the grades. The material he teaches is super interesting and I connected it to my other courses as well. He is sarcastically funny which I appreciated!

Frentz is a tough professor, but taking his class is a great experience and you feel really accomplished at the end of semester. You have to make sure to read and read well. Take extensive notes and study those extensive notes. He'll seem really tough, but if you make it past the midterm without dropping, he has all sorts of respect for you.

Frentz is extremely knowledgeable about film and he is also very good at explaining it to students who have never studied film before. Make sure you read the textbook! He gives pop quizzes about 1 in 3 classes, and they will either save or curse your grade. Also do the study questions so it's easier to study for exams. The films are good too!

The class is very simply laid out and organized. There are 4 in-class quizzes, 1 in-class extra credit assignment, and three exams. If you go to class every week, read the texts that he asks you to, and have an okay memory (or good work ethic!) you'll be absolutely fine. The films he shows are ALL worth seeing, even if it's not your cup of tea.

This class is intellectually challenging, if you do not want to actually learn this is not the class for you. You have to read every class, and the grades are from quizzes, 3 papers, and 2 written exams. But it was one of my favorite classes. He is hilarious, knows what he is talking about, and you will learn tons about SF in film and literature.

This is an extremely difficult class. One of the rudest professor, especially if you try to email him for help. The tests and quizzes are impossible. Do not take this professor!!!!

This class should NOT be a 1000 level course. Frentz pulls a lot of his test material from the textbook and it is very specific- almost impossible to study for! He is smart but not very helpful

Prof. Frentz is actually a really funny, intelligent guy. However, he knows that people take his course as a blowoff elective, which I assume is why he makes it intentionally difficult. If you take the readings seriously (always assume there will be a quiz) you'll be fine. If not, this course will eat you alive and Frentz will have no mercy on you.

Frentz is a nice guy. He seems knowledgeable about film and different components of it. BUT THE CLASS SUCKS. Seems like it'd be an easy "A" but it's not. It only meets once a week and for three hours and every week you're expected to read 30-60 page chapters. You have to read because the pop quizzes (4 per semester) are all based on the reading.

enjoyable elective course. you get to watch movies every class. but there are only 8 grades I think. 5 pop quiz and 3 test. you have to read 30-50 pages a week because of pop quizzes, if you do that and take notes about his lecture, then you'll get an A. Hardwork is the key here, don't need to be smart. I got 100% on final test just because I read.

Only 3 tests and 5 pop quizzes so there was not many grades. At first I was doing very poorly, but somehow managed to pull of an A because the curve was so high. Be prepared for pop quizzes and do all of the readings his tests are usually textbook heavy. Also get to know the TA well he will help a lot.

it's a hard class. But there is a huge curve. I personally struggled, and I know a lot of other people did too. You'll watch some weird movies. And a lot of studying is required. The curve is really helpful though. If you go to his office hours he'll look at your notes and try his best to help you out though.

You are expected to read 20-50 chapter pages every time before class, because there are 4 5 point quizzes. They are random questions that are on these quizzes. Take notes no matter what and pay attention to the movies. I did not take the quizzes serious and failed out. Tests are ok. just study every single thing you have with information on it.

He is annoying. The movies you watch are pretty old and not great. Tests are hard. Have to read a lot and need to know and understand a lot of definitions.

Grade consists of 5 quiz grades and 3 tests including final. So you must read for pop quizzes and tests are pretty clear on what is going to be on them. Adds significant curve to final. My mistake was not taking the quizzes and reading the chapters seriously other than that an A is possible.

As long as you read and know vocab from each chapter the pop quizzes aren't bad. Be sure to stay at least for the lecture part of class to get notes before the movie.
