Comment:
The Linear Algebra department kind of sucks at UNCC. However, there are far worse teachers than Dr. Lucas. He keeps the test simple (3 tests 6 questions each) while the final is 10 questions. Difficult though, no test reviews or anything. Do the HW and study previous tests to do well in his class. Not great, not terrible either.

Worst professor I've ever had in college. Always speaks indecipherably "This student did this and this student did this" instead of being straightforward and actually explaining the steps you need to take to solve a problem. Had to google every lesson. your final grade is 3 tests(6 short answers) and a final exam with harsh grading. HARD to get A.

He was very scattered brained and lazy. The online grades you have are the three test and the Final. DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN!!!

Listen, if you have no previous experience in calculus, and you know that math is not a strong point for you, drop the class. Immediately. You will not do well. He has a hard to understand teaching style, he goes through the stuff quickly, and he gives you no type of study guide what so ever for his tests. Good Luck !

Once you understand what he is talking about the class is actually pretty easy but you have to teach yourself a lot of the information. He assigns HW but it is not graded though you should do it anyway. He grades tests pretty hard and since tests are the only part of your grade it can be hard to get an A. Tests were 6 free response questions.

The only reason as rating him as "hard" is because I've had to teach myself this entire course. Luckily, I took AP calc in high school so I was very familiar with everything we learned but I was still beyond confused. Doesn't give practice tests or any review. Do NOT take his class.

This professor is definitely different in his teaching style, he almost tells a story while he tries to teach you calculus. He is nice but his teaching methods do not make sense. If you have never taken a pre calculus class DO NOT TAKE THIS COUSRE. Plus he gives no study or prep materials before exams and quizzes.

Calc II is difficult and Lucas does not make it any easier hardly any examples of problems and his hand writing is terrible which makes it more difficult to take notes.

He didn't tell us what the first test would be like. So I had an F in the beginning. Most of the class failed the first test. For the second and third test he gave a review and the test was just like it. In the end I got a B. You really don't have to show up unless it's test day. He posts the reviews online. Be prepared for "So you go, Oh..."

He was of no help at first, but after the first test, when everyone but two people failed, he started breaking things down more. I once counted the number of times he said "and you go/say": 126 in one hour. Class format: three exams and one final that can replace the lowest score.

Very harsh grading. Do not be surprised if you get only 20, 30, or 40% on a homework set. Tests are homework problems restated. If you ask how to do homework problems he will at most give you a small hint. Overall very hard and not recommended.

TAKE THIS CLASS. He doesn't used the book. You can probably get through it without it. Go to his office hours. He wants you to get an A. At first it seems very hard but I promise it gets better! He's a very nice teacher. Kind of corky but keeps it light. :)

I really didn't think this class was too bad. Prof. Lucas is a really smart guy. Sometimes he went off on tangents that went totally over my head, but it didn't affect me doing well in the class. Do the homework if you aren't understanding the concepts. MAKE SURE you are there for his test reviews... they are EXACTLY like the tests!

If you can translate "yeah"'s, "um"'s, and "this guy"'s to linear algebra I would say take him. If not stay far away. I pretty much had to teach myself linear algebra all semester. Studied hard, went by his office, and did all the homework...still only got a B.

fairly easy professor. His tests are similar to his homeworks like the person below me stated. I thought i did really well but got a c. he likes to go off topic but somehow it relates to his subject. imo, i think he grades too hard on proofs, ie: if you miss a theorem you can expect for 80% off your hw problem. but he lets you redo homework problem

Do the HW. The tests are just HW problems restated, and even some of the HW problems are HW problems restated. Easy for a logical person.

Awesome teacher. Tells crazy stories. Just do the homeworks, and the tests will come naturally. His notes get pretty hectic at times, and most of the notes toward the end of the semester had really nothing to do with the homeworks/tests/final. Would definitely take him again (that is, if he ever taught another course other than 3163)

Not to be confused with Thomas R. Lucas of the math department! T.G. Lucas made the course extremely easy. The textbook by Hungerford is almost redundant if you go to each class and take good notes. The homeworks are straightforward. He does not talk to himself...he is outlining his thought processes for you. Listen to him and you'll get an A!

This professor is absolutely horrible!! The study guides he gives for the tests do not help you prepare for the tests at all. He is not able to explain things in an easily understandable way. Avoid this professor as though your life depended on it!
