He is a really nice man and clearly has an extensive knowledge on the subject. His lectures, however, ramble on and are hard to discern relevant information from irrelevant. His TAs grade very harshly and aren't clear in the quizzes on what they are actually looking for. He doesn't post anything at all online even as far as resources to help.

I had him for ASNS 1150 and was very glad I did. He was very interesting and his lecture style worked very well for me. While the class wasn't "easy", he was very straightforward about what you had to do, and if you did it, you got an A. His class was very engaging, and I even decided to take another class with him this semester.

I absolutely love this professor, but he grades hard. He TA sucked and I hated that she was in charge of my papers. However, I learned a lot from this class and also got to have many interesting discussions in Prof. Havens' office hours. Definitely go to those if you are interested in Asian Studies beyond the class.

THIS IS A HISTORY CLASS! Don't take this course with this prof. Take it with a different prof. He loves essay and there is a ridiculous amount of course reading. For 75% of students with Havens, this course will screw up their GPA.

I get absolutely lost in his lectures. While trying my best to pay attention, he just rambles on and on and I never seem to know what he is saying. Not even worth trying to take notes because the lectures are all over the place and his chalk board notes are just as bad if not worse. Really regret taking this class, really going to screw my GPA

Mr. Havens (Tom) is a very nice man and a great teacher. There is a lot of reading, but the syllabus lets you know what you actually have to read, so as long as you are prepared you can do well. He LOVES it when you go to his office hours, so take advantage of that and he can really help you out with his class and any other academic needs you have.

The class contains a lot of reading and it is useful to do it. The lectures are pointless and a complete waste of time. Take detailed notes on the readings and READ ALL THE BOOKS. The notes will help you organize your papers better and make it very easy to study for the midterms and finals - both consisting of essays

Talks. A lot. About stuff you don't need to know. The class is at least 100 pages of reading a week, several essays, and a final. If you're really interested in the material, it's great. Otherwise you'll be bored out of your skull. The only complaint is that grades are somewhat arbitrary -- often based on how much he agrees with your paper.

Havens is a so-so teacher. He is very smart and knows his stuff but he is very boring. He lectures for a very long time, and it IS a good idea to bring a tape recorder. There is A LOT of reading, but virtually no homework. Asking questions in class will get you on his good side. Attendance is not enforced but is noticed.

havens is the nicest guy ever, but he makes you do the work. you will do well on your essays and midterm/final if you can memorize/use dates (seriously people it's a history class) because it really impresses him. do at least some of the reading so you can participate in class--he will love you for this. if he likes you he writes great recommendati

Nicest man in the world! His lectures can be a little slow and there is a lot of reading, but the reading is not too challenging and as long as you do it you'll be fine. He's incredibly understanding and approachable- awesome professor

most of the notes he puts up on the board are useless and usually only clarifies in his lectures- which is basically an hour + of long and unclear talking... I recommend bringing a tape recorder for each class and he is an extremely strict grader on papers

TONS of reading, don't take this as an elective unelss you got an easy schedule! Almost nobody read the textbook even though the course lectures were based on it, however he doesn't test you on textbook material (only on midterm which was two inclass essays), most of the grading is done on papers that you do on other readings. 8 BOOKS total!!!

havens is a really smart guy, and he has a lot of really interesting things to say, however, can be a bit boring. there's also a TON TON TON of reading for this class in particular. i also took his intro to EAS and there wasn't as much reading in that one. he's a fair grader, and wants you to do well. i got an A- in both courses i took with him.
