Comment:

Professor Thompson grades according to a rubric which he follows to the letter, as long as you do the same you'll be fine. His projects are annoying and the book is useless but he's an okay guy with interesting stories to tell if you care about how English is used globally.

Comment:

World Englishes is a very enjoyable class. In order to get an "A," follow Thompson's exact instructions and skim the textbook. Be sure to complete the online review yourself before every exam because those questions appear on the test. Review on your own because Thompson never completely goes through the review and when he does it's very rushed.

This class is useful but the way Dr. Thompson teaches is such a turn off. He's incredibly hard-headed and stuck in his own ways. He contradicts himself and the textbook. He'll tell you the textbook is wrong, if you read the answer verbatim! If you want to get an "A," learn to play his game; he's right and the book is wrong.

Just awful. Save yourself all the money you'll spend on coffee trying to stay awake in class and just take someone else. He's incredibly hard-headed and stuck in his own ways, and don't even bother trying to participate because you won't get any kind of response - he'll just go right on with his own little nonsense stories about the Philippines.

wow, i didn't believe all the reviews when i read them, but they are all true! while the topic itself is interesting, i have not learned anything useful all semester... subjective grading, getting interrupted in class, and hearing information that many students (from other classes) know to be false is all a part of the thompson experience.

He called me an oriental in front of everyone (my mom's from S. Korea). He TRIES to be a good teacher with gimmicks, cartoons, etc., but it's really annoying. You can have a question right on a test, but he'll take off points for something irrelevant (like misspellings). He also ends every other sentence with "and whatever" which gets annoying...

Absolutely the worst professor I have had at UF. Rambles on about his ten children, his various accomplishments, nothing class-related. No compassion for students, grades almost entirely on technicalities. If a student speaks in class, he cuts him/her off so he can keep talking. No excused absences AT ALL. Egotistical, rude, avoid at all costs

I can't express how pointless my days with Thompson are. When he's not stereotyping people. He's babbling off on some inconsequential tangent. I spent about 8 hours on an assignment that was worth 20 points versus the exam which I spent about an hour studying for and got an A. The man makes me wanna...
