Very charismatic, very intelligent. He makes you aware of his political belief from the get-go and does't undermine yours. His lectures ran over more often than not. Graded on 2 papers, a midterm, attendance and the final. Attendance weighs heavy so be warned , and TONS of reading. Overall, can't go wrong with Dr. Spehn.

At first I thought he would be an amazing teacher, but I was wrong. Very disorganized, only does boring lectures and graded by 3-4 things throughout the semester. Doesn't know students names so don't understand how he does his participation grades. On the pro, he does care about politics but doesn't necessary portray the best political professor.

Dr. Spehn has become my favorite Professor here at UCD. I have taken 3 courses with him and he has been a huge inspiration for me. He is very articulate, well read, and does well to explain contrasting political ideologies through many different lenses, forcing you to think and in many instances, question your own beliefs. He really loves his field

Great professor. I just signed up to take another class with him. He listens to everyone, explains everything in a way that you can understand, and always asks if you need clarification. He actually cares if his students understand the material, and he uses a lot of relevant information to make the class useful.

His discussions are very engaging and have real world application. He does make some of his political ideology obvious but he is always fair about discussions and never acts like his opinions are absolute dogma.

He is really talented at lecturing and presenting a well-balanced opinion on almost any politcal topic. He is one of the few professors who can lecture so well its interesting to hear it all. Most of the class grade is dependent on exams however so take it if you are up to it.

I have taken prof Spehn 3 times (undergrad and grad) and while he does create a compelling environment during his lectures where discourse is encouraged, he's much too hard when it comes to grading papers. I usually get high B's and A's for my writing and he usually gave me low B's at best.

Entertaining and intelligent. He's a breath of fresh air when it comes to honest political processes. Some don't like his opinions but, it's politics-it's all about opinion, and this is a country where opinions should be freely spoken and understandably accepted. Get over it. His tests are difficult but he's lenient. If you want honesty, take him!

While he does bash on America (at least the right) he is a good teacher. I don't believe an instructor or student's political opinion belong in class. He will let you voice your opinion in response to his and not hold it against you. He was well prepared for class and a good lecturer.

Excellent class, excellent teacher, particularly if you're not in the mood to hear jingoistic pro-America propaganda all the time- he's German, and it helps to get that perspective of America from the outside.

This guy was a terrible professor. I had been in the political science department for 2 years prior to taking his class and he completely went a different direction than all the other teachers. He pretty much destroyed my love of politics and constantly bashed America and the American society. It was truly hard to sit through. :(

Really nice and helpful guy. His intro class taught me a lot and I looked forward to going to it everyday. Make sure to take notes because he pulls questions on tests straight out of them. Plus his TA was really hot.

Fantastic teacher! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Funny, intelligent, actually cares and pays attention to the students...Will actually learn your name & will help you as much as he can. He assigns a lot of reading, but at least with the class I took, everything he assigned as reading, he talked about in class anyway! I never read & got an A-!

Thorsten is a great teacher. However, you can not slack off in his class. His grading is not hard if you show that you know what you are talking about even if the answer is not 100% correct. He cares about his students and their success. Plus, he is also totally hot!
