SUCH a nice guy, but just not a very good teacher. He goes off on long, irrelevant tangents and does not do a good job at explaining what we need to know--it sometimes seems as though he himself doesn't really know what he's teaching. Going to office hours helps, and he really does care about his students. Just needs better and more focused targets

o'brien is a very nice guy but that man can not teach. He is very unclear on the goals of the course and it is very hard to recognize what you are supposed to get out of his rambling style of lectures. He will try to help you, but he does not know how to explain information to beginners. you have to completely learn to use the program R on your own

While Dr. O'Brien is a very kind gentleman, he was not very clear about the goals for the class and I, personally, do not think the goals of the class were very focused or (the vague ones that we set) were not met. Honestly, if you pay attention in class, read the sections, and do your homework, you'll be fine. But, beware, he gets distracting.

I really enjoyed this class. It's a more in depth look at statistics with application to science. 6 quizzes, midterm, final, and a paper project. Makes sure to try a few problems per chapter , or at least until you can do the problems correctly from the study guide.

You do not need to show up for class. He posts all the notes online and pretty much just reads his notes to you in class. The tests are hard but not impossible. The homework is done in group work, which kind of sucks because its graded for corectness so your grade depends on your group. Overall, the course is a lot of math with a little science.

I have taken 335/336 with him and he is a really smart man who is at the forefront of his field. Although he may not be the best teacher, he really exposes us to important statistics concepts in biology/health. He teaches us the basics and expects us to APPLY all the concepts, which is what should be expected from a stats class! TAKE HIM!

biggest waste of my time to go to class because, well, he doesnt teach during class. you'll hear more about how stats 'is all around us' and about his thai wife than about the material you should be learning. with him you have to teach yourself and it helps to have a buddy.

Overall, I was extremely disappointed with this class. Lectures had no organization. Homework was difficult in the sense that it required a ridiculous amount of web searching or trying to get into his office to ask (almost impossible)- no critical thinking or original though required. He was an (unnecessarily) difficult grader. Funk is better.

the people who complains about dr. o'brien are probably pre-med students who don't know how to add. stats isn't a hard concept, and the pace isn't fast, i think you'd have to try to get anything less than a B

This is the worst teacher at Loyola. If you go to him for help he is not helpful at all, but rather critical. His tests are nothing like the homework so even if you understand the homework prepare to fail the tests. He should not be a teacher & his jokes are not funny.

He's the best teacher i have had at Loyola so far. He is very clear and makes the hardest material easy. His exams are challenging but if u study you will get an A. For 337 classes there are take home exams and he helps with them a lot.He is such a brilliant guy

His class is difficult but if you do the work you can get an A. He LOVES what he does and is very willing to help out his students. His examples he gives in class are more real life which makes it interesting! Great guy and actually made stats interesting! Take him!

Dont expect an A from him. You can give the right answers straight out of the book, do the exact requirements for his projects, but he'll still take points off for no reason. Picks favorites. Doesnt go over material but expects you to know it. Third grade experiments every week rather than catching up on material, even when class requests it

Teaches like we're in high school. Lets the same two people rattle on about nothing the whole class. He doesn't even teach math because everyone in the class cried about doing math problems. Beware as you have to write papers for this class. 8 page papers for math class? Yeah, it sucks that bad.

He expects you to know material when you come to class. In his explanation he gives you a lot of examples, but does not explaines concepts. 10% of your grade is participation, which means you need to answer his questions on material. He calls your name and asks a question.

Taken him twice now. Lots of work both times but I learned an awful lot, more than from most profs. He is extremely helpful and patient outside of class. If you don't mind work, highly recommended.
