Dr. Patten is a fantastic professor. His lectures, although a little dry at times, are very clear, helpful and logically put together. His practice tests are very helpful although I wouldn't count on the exam being exactly the same. Go to lecture, read and do all the practice problems and you will be golden. Not an unattainable A.

Great lecturer. I took the summer session with him so my experience have have been different, but I remember a harsh transition as the class moved on to actual reactions - beware of this. His tests are rather easy and somewhat similar to the practice tests. You've heard all of the nightmare stories about o chem. They don't start till 118B.

Had him for summer session. Goes through material directly from the book so the lecture is a bit boring. Midterm and final were almost like the practice exams but make sure you understand mechanisms. True that his office hours are bad and does not seem to want to arrange meetings with students. Overall a decent teacher but don't get excited.

good professor, lectures are organized and follows the book really well, his tests are simple but long, his actual tests are EXACTLY like the practice midterms he posts online, most of the questions were just reworded and asked on the actual tests, if you understand his practice tests you will do really well in the class

He did not really care for the class as much as other teachers i've had, office hours times were poorly chosen and i don't know anyone that went to them so he should have changed them. Buy the Study guide and do the homework its probably the most helpful part of the class, lecture is a waste of time, know pKa's, beware of his single pocket jeans

Very straight fwd professor. Tests are lecture material only so just memorize all lecture material and you'll do fine. Don't really need the book for extra help. Can be funny at times. More relaxed atmosphere than nasiri, had her for 2 quarters. lecture material is also less in depth than nasiri.

Pretty good prof. To do well, mainly know lecture material. In other words, dont miss lecture & take good notes. I did best on the test when all I did was made sure I knew the lecture material. the book material really wasnt very helpful for his class. his class is based more on memorization than nasiris whos was based a lot on concepts-not too har

he is not bad, but again, not too clear either. he speaks relatively soft so make sure to get front row seat. his tests are about 5 times easier than nasiris, though.

I took his class last year and he was the only teacher that made O chem make sense and I've taken it with Nasiri and Nambiar so I have the experience to compare. He does speak softly and the speaker system in Hart 1104 didnt help much.

Dr. Patten speaks with a very soft voice and tends to mumble so I would recommend sitting close to the front. His tests are hard and can be tricky with concepts like NMR. Practice with the old midterms available on the library reserve to get used to the way he tests and main concepts.

Prof Patten has very clean and detailed lectures. He is somewhat arrogant and his tests (espically NMR and synthesis) are pretty hard. He is a very good teacher though, but your going ot have to study real hard! He even adds steps to mechanisms that were left out in the book! have fun and good luck

he is a good teacher/lecturer, but boring to listen to. But his class is organized and well-taught (and he doesn't have an accent of any kind, so he's clear) . His tests were not nearly as bad a Nasiri, after having her I though Patten was easy.

I thought he was an excellent teacher, made me not want to miss class, except when he let the head TA teach, tests are very straight foward, he doesn't try to trick you.

If you go to lecture and supplement this by reading the corresponding sections in the book you'll be fine. His tests are fair and reflect the material presented in class. VERY helpful in office hours. O-chem is hard for any teacher so study hard
