Comment:
To be frankly, I have to spend at least average 20 hours per week on this course, and even more during ths final project, it's really a very time consuming class, though it will force you to learn a lot.. MySQL, PHP, Flask or whatever.. The lecture is NOT helpful with those, only the assignment(grade) gives you the motivation to learn things.

Comment:
Class is extremely boring as he read off slides and there is 0 engagement. He gives complex examples in the air which is very hard to follow without whiteboard but he doesn't care if we follow or not. HW and project is very heavy but only counts a small part of total grade. So course is graded on how well you do in exams.

Torsten is an amazing professor, he has a lot of researches and papers in web searching engine field, and he gave us a lot of help and advice for our homework and project. Torsten's lecture is fast-paced and high-workload, and so can we learn a lot of stuff.

Highly streamlined class. Teaches very well. Homeworks are hard and take time. Work hard and you'll learn a lot. The class size is normally huge, so zoning off during lectures is a problem. Grading is tough.

Awesome Professor. Don't take this course if you want only grades. This course is meant for people who want to learn concepts. He articulates the topics and is always approachable.

DON'T TAKE CS 3083 with him. If you actually wanna learn database concepts, just make your own websites using online tutorials. That's what we had to do for our group projects anyway. He had no clarity whatsoever regarding any of the project work. Homework is useless as others mentioned. Only good thing is sometimes he gives you HW extensions.

Majority of his slides are not his. He just "modifies" them. He promises have part 1 of our project graded before part 2 so that students can have a chance to do better on the second part which is worth more, however he failed to do so. Also, he never taught php but expects you to make a full blown facebook like website within 2 weeks before finals

Do not take this class. You will not learn much from it. Final project was given 2 weeks before the semester ended. The professor reads off the slides and sometimes stumbles through the examples. The professor is not very clear on the material he is teaching us. However, he will provide extensions as long as we ask for it.

Absolutely terrible professor. Slides do not reflect what will be tested on, homework is pointless because you receive no useful feedback, and a semester long project was given out a week before classes ended. Avoid like the plague.

Promised to give a group project halfway into the semester and gave it the last week of class. Specifications were not clear for the course work and was graded harshly. Textbook and powerpoint slides don't support class material. Very boring lectures and often reads off the slide.

The professor didn't explain enough to the students on what was required. The final test was insanely difficult featuring items that were beyond what the students believed was necessary. The professor's slides are very hard to understand, so studying makes very little impact.

This is the worst class you can possibly take. He thinks everyone is a graduate student and gives undergraduate students graduate materials. Seriously you are better off watching birds then taking his class. Please save yourself and don't take his class

For an introductory databases course that most students take as an elective, he sure hammered us with long assignments and exams. Very smart professor, but also very high expectations. Expect to work.

He is in the knowledgeable professor category form NYU School of Engineering. In lectures he tries to teach you every thing provided you listen to him. Assignments are tough but prepare you for exams. Group project is tough but fills you with DB concepts. He is very kind and helpful, always welcome questions and gives you proper feedback
