If you're in New Media, it's impossible to get by without help from Velma. She can be a little tough to get to know at first, but she really cares about students and helping them. As said, she is the backbone of this department.

When I need help, Velma is very dismissive as if she has no clue what I'm talking about and sends me to find someone else. I needed to rent a camera from the closet one weekend, but it closed early without warning and she refused to help me, and my project was done late as a result. I appreciate her emails for opportunities and events, tho.

Comment:

Velma is the backbone of the New Media Department. Out of all the professors and T.A.'s in the program, NONE have such a well-rounded view on the program and individual classes. I HIGHLY recommend becoming friends with her both for the academic advice she can offer, but also because she is one of the nicest people I have met in the NMD Department.

The NMD is one of the most promising departments of UM, but is underfunded, underdeveloped, and filled with teachers who run courses by their own agendas. Velma Figgins is the only hope and joy I found in this major. Very nice and helpful. Plus she has a wicked cool dog.

Velma is a godsend! she is the most helpful person with just about any situation. usually don't even bother going to my advisor with questions, because Velma has all the answers. sweet lady too.
