I'm okay with Farag as a professor. He does his best to explain what is being taught.. The way he teaches it is hard for those who this is their 1st/2nd coding class ever to understand the concepts which are important for programming. CodeLab doesn't help. His labs I don't like because they were more copying code, which doesn't teach anything

Dr. Farag knows what he is talking about but forgets that this is supposed to be an intro course. He tells you to work with partners constantly but when nobody knows what they're doing it's pretty hard to learn anything. He acts as if every student in his class has been programming for 3 years but majority of us have never even programmed.

He is a nice man, but a hard professor. His final is cumulative and he had no study sheet on what to study. Kind of leaves you to figure things out on your own. I would not recommend him. If you are taking him, good luck and try to stay up on the slide shows!

I don't know how to program anything, but I got a B in the class. It is all about how well you can study and has nothing to do with your ability to actually program.

Dr. Farag is a very knowledgeable professor, just his class structure doesn't make sense. He asks very vague questions on exams, but wants specific answers. We had 5 projects through out the semester, and 3 of them we presented on. So for three weeks the whole class presented their projects, which were all on the same topic.

Comment:

The fact that a lot of people don't like Farag confuses me. I had a great experience with him. He grades fairly, gives great feedback, gives manageable coursework, and, above all, is just a really, REALLY great lecturer. He makes complex concepts very clear and easy to understand, and is always willing to help if you don't. Highly recommended.

He doesn't have to many office hours, his tests are hard to study for since he doesnt give out a study guide. He says everything is important. I learned more from the tutors and the chair of the department then the teacher. He made this my hardest class, and very little help.

Seriously that guy shouldn't teach he would do much batter if he work in a company or something like that. Although I love computer and technology I changed my major because of him he make the course very hard instead of make it easier. DO NOT TAKE HIM

As many others indicated, the class is really hard. The professor is a nice guy and always willing to help. Lots of projects and assignments, some of them are challenging. Take him if you truly need to know how to program. I recommend him.

This class is hard. People told me he was the best to take for this class, but he was still difficult. Didn't really help me much in office hours. Assignments were misserable. Codelabs wernt bad. I wouldn't take him again.

I took this course online. He graded the projects fairly, but the assignments were very difficult to read and he wasn't much help. Do not take his class before you take statistics. The quizzes were poorly worded and ridiculously rushed. 60 problems in 40 minutes, so if you want to appeal a grade on a quiz you better be using FRAPS.

Really hard class, tests were ridiculously hard, Final was near impossible. Sometimes have a hard time understanding him but if go to his office after hours he will help you out. Hes a real nice guy but I would'nt recommend taking him, or almost any of the computer science teachers, one of the worst colleges at IUP.

Class is just hard no matter who you take it with. I didn't get higher then a 40% on a test or home work assignment and he gave me a D. He is a real nice guy and is willing to help. I would say take him over any other COSC Professor.

Grades strangely. I wrote a program that worked perfectly and got a 60% on it. Also I more or less wrote it for my friend (so they were almost identical) and he got a 72%. I looked where he took points off mine and it was because I did stuff to save space on the print out. This happened more than once.
