I took Dr. Pauley several years ago, and just thought I'd chime in. It has been many years since my graduation, but Dr. Pauley is one of the few professors that stick out during my time at MU. You'd be doing yourself a disservice as a biology major to not take his classes.

Dr. Pauley is the most amazing professor on campus. He knows his herps and he has such passion with conservation. His classes are not hard as long as you study and he is a super nice, approachable guy. I wish more professors would be human like Dr. Pauley.

Comment:
His true passion I believe is with the herpetology classes, but all the same, he was very enthusiastic about conservation. Since the class was only once a week, copying all his powerpoint notes really hurt your hand. However, his office is open to anyone who want to come and review the powerpoint notes in case you were unable to copy a slide or 2.

Don't buy the book, you won't need it. No final project even though it's on the syllabus. Lots of notes, your hand will hurt by the end of class each night but its better than doing labs or papers. Study ALL NOTES for ALL EXAMS...everything is fair game, and don't trust his study guides to be complete, esp. on the last two or three exams!

One of the best professors I had at Marshall. If I had stuck with Pre-Med, I would have taken him once if it killed me to do so. He's a genius science mind, and especially loves his bugs. He is easy to understand, and easily approachable. He's a huge Steelers fan also, and will talk football with you.

Great teacher, and great guy all around. Tons of experience, lengthy list of publications, very devoted to his work and to every student. Take a class from him; there aren't a lot of chances to be taught by the guy who literally wrote the book. A legend in his field, with a great sense of humor and an inspiring devotion to conservation.

This class is vintage Pauley: get a million handouts, memorize them, write down minute details he tells you in class, memorize those, get a good grade. The tests in here are tricky, but most of them have way more than 100 pts.

He's a nice guy, but his lectures are not very interesting. The tests were so thorough that I found they tested your memory rather than testing concepts. Easy to do really bad in this class if you are not careful. Study everything!

Herpetology is a lot of fun. Dr. Pauley really knows his stuff. The lab tests are usually easy and the lecture tests can be tricky, but the lab exams count for as much as the tests in lecture.
