Class lacks structure & little instruction. Careless mistakes on exams can be costly; dont underestimate the vocab quizzes b/c it can make a difference between a solid grade & a borderline one. Dont take the class unless youre into Russian or youll need a lot of self-motivation.

Walt is such an amazing professor. He really cares for his students and will definitely help if you are struggling in something. I have taken Russian before at past colleges and he taught me some tricks that I found really helped me in this incredibly confusing language.

Comment:

Absolutely an incredible teacher for Russian 101. Russian is a really hard language and his class moves fast, but he moves the class in pace with his students and is very understanding. He also understands the course material very well since he wrote the textbook (which is the cheapest textbook you'll find in the bookstore). Highly recommend!

Great teacher with a ton of knowledge and expertise on Russia. The class has a lot of reading but the reading is very engrossing and doesn't end up feeling like that much. The only flaw is that grading is very subjective. I would nevertheless highly recommend taking his class.

Make sure you take notes on everything he & Caldwell mentions in class if you are not going to read; the reading is heavy & about 40% of it is absolutely necessary. The powerpoints will be your savior for the midterm & final. Make sure you read two novels thoroughly; you will need them for essays. Don't be afraid if you can't participate in class.

Why Prof. Richmond is adjunct still is beyond me. Oxy please wake up and advance this hard working professor. Students report that the course is easy, all to the slight of hand R. has put tons of hard work in course prep, his subject knowledge is vast. One of the best classes I have taken at Oxy. definitely take this CSP if you have the chance. it is a lot of reading, so treat it like a history class but so worth it! Teaches it with caldwell. Amazing duo. A lot of work, but tests are pretty straightforward. readings aren't 100% necessary. only did about half of them. Also he is an awesome person

Richmond is a great and caring prof. (I'm rating for is lang. classes although I've taken his lit. and culture classes and they're equally good although a little more difficult). His tests and quizzes for Russian are really straight forward and he's always happy to meet with you! I can't recommend him enough.

He's super chill and tries to make the Russian language as non-intimidating as possible. The only text you have to buy is the textbook he wrote, which is like 7 bucks. I've had more exciting and dynamic language teachers before, but he does love what he teaches. Extremely nice and unendingly helpful.

He's a very interesting and smart guy. I enjoyed the class. I thought he was a lazy grader though because we didn't get our 15 page research paper back (which was one of three grades in the entire class) but I would recommend the class definitely

I've had many great professors at Oxy and Richmond is probably on top of that list. Every class is enjoyable, he makes the Russian language very easy to learn because he wrote the textbook, not to mention he is a GENIUS in his field of study. His classes are the easiest I've had at oxy and almost paradoxically the ones where I've learned the most. When a student is struggling he will stop the class a moment and walk right over to them and help directly. AMAZING. KIND. UNDERSTANDING. GENIUS.

Simply brilliant. I have never had a language professor who has been so crystal clear about the subject matter. Responds to E-Mails more-reliably than most professors, too, which is really something of a luxury here at Oxy.
