He knows the subject well but his teaching methods are not effective. Grading is by conducting the class- but he doesn't give you any feedback on your performance. Grading is incomprehensible as he will not tell you your scores unless you hound him and then it's a rough estimate. AND he favors his band members- so yeah for you if you are in band.

I think Dr. Erickson is a wonderful man, full of patience, knowledge and a great love for music and helping students enjoy playing music and getting better everyday. I do wish that there was a bit more professionalism in the classroom but I believe that most of that is due to the lack of respect from the students. Time is often wasted in class.

Butch will do anything for anyone. He's probably the most caring professor/teacher I've ever had. Your attitude is probably the most important thing in his band. You'll get out of it what you put in it. He's such a good guy, and if you have problems with him, it's YOUR fault.

I took conducting and he was way harsh in judging. Conducting isn't hard but I ended up w/ a C. He makes you conduct by yourself in front of the class (which your not used to like your own choir). He had us conduct our classmates humming the song. So when you bring in the bass parts you actually hear girls and it's confusing and not realistic.

Seems a nice guy to get along with at first, but his mind isn't in teaching. Discipline is non-existant and it shows by how the band plays. As long as the band can get through the music without a train wreck (or despite them) he's ok with it. Music selection is great, if you play clarinet (his instrument). Is he just there to pay the bills?

He was a great instructor. Made the information fun and had stories to tell about a lot of the music. He wanted his students to do well. I felt bad for him because most of the students came to class and didn't participate. Take his class, he is a great instructor.

Very good teacher, although the subject is not very appealing to me He made it kind of interesting. He knows a lot about music. Very easy class, I would recommed taking this class from Him. Much better teacher than the other music 1010 teachers.

Easy A ++ Dont buy the book: He is a great man, very relaxed, grades for the class mid term, final- will email you the review. 4 concerns u need to go to, and 4 reports of a composer. Prof. Erickson is great. He knows a lot about music. Sure his class is easy but you learn a ton from him which you don't get from most teachers. Awesome class. I definatly recommend taking it!

Here's the jist of the class: The first couple weeks people can bring in music and you all listen to it. There's a midterm test that he gives you the 30 questions for beforehand. At the end, you turn in 4 composer reports and 4 concert reports, and there's a final with a listening part and more questions that he gives you beforehand.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE BOOK! The only thing you need are the CD's it comes with for the listening part of the final. I went to class probably 60% of the days it was held and got an A. Watch Amadeus before the midterm and be prepared for an easy A. Really....a very easy A!

he was pretty easy and fun. He did have a couple report to do and concerts to go to, but he would let us bring in our own music and we would listen to it and discuss the elements to make it fun. I really enjoyed him and learned something.

i think that he should use more discipline...it seemed like i was in high school whenever i was in his class. but if you can stand that, he's a great guy, very nice, but there are some 'pet peaves' that he won't budge about, so watch out for those.

This class is extemely easy and fun. Prepare for a very relaxed teacher. He's also very helpful to anyone who has a question. If you ask a question he'll probably get carried away while answering it. Amadeus is a very interesting movie.

He's a good director; he knows and loves what he teaches. He expects a lot and should get a lot because he works really hard. He is pretty laid back in rehearsals and wants people to have fun, but at the same time expects people to be on task.
