One of the great ones. I had him in the spring of 1965, he was about 30, and beardless. We had met boxing in the weight room over the Christmas Break. I was shocked to see him as my English teacher, as all I knew was his first name. We became friends immediately. I composed a song cycle with four of his poems, and his loved it.

Hilarious. I thought he was so funny. He was so cynical and hates teenage pop culture. He rags on hipsters etc. He kind of rambles on about his published stuff and experience with poetry etc but still really great. I loved his class even though I hate poetry. Plus, he loved my poems! I'm sad that he's gone.

Was a really cool guy, and not too hard if you did the essays. He graded almost purely on grammar/punctuation and very little on content. I just learned that he passed away, which is sad because he was great and always had really good stories.

The dear man really should retire. It's not fair to students who want to learn anything that he's allowed to continue. Team teaches with his brother (maybe because he had a stroke/heartattack last year?)even after the college told him not to. Watched a lot of movies. Conversations were more about current events than anything historically relevant.

If want to get an A in this class all you need to do is take your papers to the writing center. He is VERY particular about grammar and punctuation so it is best to get it all corrected. If you have one comma splice he will mark your paper down an entire letter grade. He does not care about content at all. Pretty much a guaranteed A if you do this.

Takes a few classes to explain how to use punctuation (which is KEY in his class) as well as a few other things students should already know, he doesn't explain them in terms that most or any of the class understands... Punctuation is 75% of papers and content is 25%, so if you have memorized the MLA Handbook then you are set for this class...

This is my second semester with him, and I have learned so much. He is challenging and prepares you for university level. Anyone that loves literature and cares about their education will appreciate his genius. Like a challenge? Take him and stay open. He makes you back up your ideas and really think for yourself.

I just loved him! He's so intelligent and funny. If you want to slide through an English class without learning a thing, don't chose him. If you want to leave a class knowing tons more than you do now, then he is your man! He asks you to get a lot of text books, but never really asks you to use them or bring them to class.

overall a good prof. One of the most boring lecturers in the universe. Lots of writing but he has a very generous grading system, if you make it to the end of the semester he he just tells cool stories all period, the last few weeks of class he cancelled alot of classes and just answered questions about the final on days that there was class.

Pretty dry class, but a kind and funny guy, especially if you talk to him outside class. loves environment/native american lit, which I'm not a huge fan of. i'd never gotten a B on a paper in my entire life until his class. It was a reality check and turned me into a much better writer! Hard but worth it- I've never felt so good about getting an A!

Overall, a great teacher! However, he is extremely “harsh†regarding grammar and spelling. Hotchkiss is by far the most challenging professor I’ve had thus far, but also the most rewarding. While his class does not always pertain to English, he is willing to help whenever possible. I must warn you however that this course will NOT be an easy A.

Tends to go off subject often, knows what he saying when he stays on subject. requires a lot of reading and several essays, none are very difficult. VERY PICKY on grammer and spelling, thats where he gets you. He loves to use red pen. Is not very helpfull unless you directly ask him. Someti

Poor teacher. Uses class to sell his books. Class assignments are not clear. Lacks critical thinking abilities, (still believes that global warming is a myth but is unable to defend his position with facts or scientific reasoning). Avoid if possible.

I was an English major before taking three of Professor Hotchkiss' classes. After taking his first class I was enthralled by his knowledge and had an even greater desire to teach at a college level. I did not find the red pen on essays offensive. Quite the contrary, it was a challenge. He is a wonderful teacher and human being.

Professor Hotchkiss is monotone...has a tendency to go off in tangents. But simply do your reading and part-take in class discussions. I wasn't crazy about the red ink comments all over my essays, and my testing was ok but was surprised I got an "A." Go figure, English is very subjective. Perhaps his Humanities class would be more stimulating.

Take another teacher!!! Hotchkiss goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with the assignments. Before taking this class I always got an A on all English assignments, now he gives me C's or lower. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! He is very unclear, and does not explain any of the assignments and pulls his information from God knows where.

Intro to Composition. This is a good class taught by a very good teacher. Yes, he does go off on tangents at times. As long as you keep up with the reading and prepare yourself for the essays, you will do fine. He is always availible in office hours and responds to email quickly. Teaches English 1A, 1B, Poetry and English and American litt.

This guy is one of the worst professors I've ever taken. He rambles endlessly about nothing. He won't go over assignments or explain what he expects from you in your essays. Take someone else!!!

DO NOT take this class. This guy will never admit that he is wrong and is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He goes over none of the material for your weekly essays and marks points off for god knows what. He is unorganized and thinks he knows everything, when clearly he does not. Seriously, take this class with someone else!!!

I'm sorry, but this teacher is SOOOOOO BORING!!!! He assigned masses of reading then hardly ever even discussed the assignments. He has the most monotone voice in the world, with which he gives non-interactive lectures about random tangents that have nothing to do with the rest of the class. I highly recommend looking for a different teacher.
