Comment:

Although I enjoyed Latin American Civilizations overall, I did find it to be a very challenging class. Professor Matheny was not always the easiest to understand, and his quizzes were pretty tough. You definitely have to read the textbooks, and be prepared to copy a TON of notes from PowerPoint.

I love his class. I have taken 4 of his classes so far and plan on taking one more before I graduate. He really knows and teaches history, including Russia, Europe, Latin America and Celtic Studies. You do need to study for his tests and read the readings in order to pass, but he is so cute and funny when he teaches! :D

I have had the honor of being a student of Dr. Matheny. he is by far THE best professor I have ever had. His classes are challenging and his assignments can be overwhelming however his classes have made my tuition payments worth it!

An amazing prof., very smart and funny man. Read the textbook for the quizzes a/b every class. Study guides are extremely helpful for tests. You WILL learn a lot and WILL feel smarter after his class. Beware, though, of the book reports on 2 books. Easy for an upper level history class. TAKE MATHENY!Loved the class!!!

This guy is amazing. I seriously learned SO MUCH from this class. You HAVE to read, and you HAVE to study the online exams to pass the in class exams. Very fair, funny as heck. SUCH a shame he's retiring.

Matheny is an amazing teacher! He is sooo funny!! Knows the subject very well and makes the history interesting even for the non history majors. He is not too easy though, a lot of reading and quizzes every class.

Good teacher - funny and very knowledgeable and interested in his subject. Hard class, but I had no background on European History. However, a couple of honors students in my class said that this class was harder than their honors class. Sometimes hard to hear. Study HARD for tests! Use online tests to study - a must!

Dr. Matheny is a riot and a funny old man. I would recommand that you sit near the front of class because he is soft-spoken. He tells jokes and plays funny old history movies. Expect a quiz on the reading you had for homework every class hour. Dr. Matheny is one of my favorite professors!! TAKE HIM!!

I took him for HIEU 202 and now for HIEU 380. He's kind of a hard professor, but very funny. He'll say hi to you when you see him around and he's just such a wonderful man. He doesn't take any crap and he doesn't really like when you ask questions, he usually just ignores you or just gives you a round-about answer. Take him, he'll make you laugh.

HE IS CRAZY! He is so random and funny! Sometimes he would just start yelling in the most unexpected times and he tells crazy stories! The quizes are ridiculously hard, like you don't get a 100% if you read the material. The exams are pretty much 95% the online quiz so it's easy to get a good grade.

Absolutely love this man. Don't take for an easy A, but he is hilarious, esp. when he does his "Praise God, hallelujah" jig. Fun, understanding, but doesn't take crap. Overall my favourite class at LU so far.Study for the tests, they will murder you if you're not prepared. Just memorize all the questions from the website he gives, you'll be fine.

Awesome teacher who makes his classes a lot of fun. He talks from personal experience because he lived much of the history that is taught in the class from his personal experience of being a missionary in Peru. His class is not easy because his tests are super hard, plus there is a lot of reading and quizes everyday. But you will defanitly learn!
