I don't think the tests or the homework or whatever graded assignments we do are the purpose of the class --- if you do the practice problems and make a notesheet, you'll be fine. However, Monty's lectures are profound and very interesting --- sometimes you'll spend weeks trying to actually get it, but when you get them, it's fantastic. Lecture!

Had him as my two week lecturer in a math camp over the summer at UW (I'm a high school student). Although he was challenging from time to time, he would help if anyone needed it. Moreover, he is such a kind, genuine and caring person. You will not regret taking his class. I promise

McGovern is the reason I want to study algebra more. He will give you the best undergraduate experience when it comes to this subject. To be honest, there could be more homework, so if you are struggling, try and do more problems out of the textbook (Artin - for which there are hundreds). Don't skip class, or you'll miss material not in the book

The hype is well deserved. He took a difficult class and made it engaging and accessible. Lectures much more helpful than the book. Readily available if you require help. Designed the tests to be on par with the skill level of the class. Reasonable work load. Generous grading. So far, my favorite professor

Best maths professor at UW, easily. Pros: Clear, focused, organized lectures. Doesn't stray far from the book. You know exactly what to expect on the tests if you go to his review day. The theoremsdef's he hammers home is only what he tests on. Easy grader Cons: He speaks very quickly and tends to stand in front of his writing. TAKE HIS CLASS!

Had him for 309 and 324 which are both very hard classes. He is an excellent teacher: old school, very relaxed, super nice and approachable, willing to help in after hours. His tests are hard, but he's a really easy grader. He has a quirky and funny sense of humor and is very anti materialistic. One of my math favorite teachers.

Awesome professor and very nice. Assigns only 5 problems a week for homework. He knows every single thing you ask him (about math), and is very helpful and patient. You can also ask him things completely unrelated to the class, and will give you very helpful advice (I asked him for advice about being an actuary). Overall a good prof and nice person

Though he moves at a fast pace, he's clear and concise and very amenable to clarification. His assigns five problems a week from the book and allows notes on his tests, which are weighted equally with homework, making them less stressful. Over all, the classwork isn't very difficult, and if you attend class you should learn a lot and do quite well.

One of the best math prof I have ever had, His lectures are easy to follow, he has easy to read handwritting when he writes on the board (this is very rare for math profs) Whenever anyone has a question he always takes the time to answer it and he seems to always know the answer to everything. I think he is one of the best math profs around!

A thorough, intelligent, and understanding professor, but not very personable... a bit brusque. He seems to be a very nice guy, but you won't know that unless you go talk to him in person. Homework is difficult but weighted evenly with the tests, so bad test-takers will have a chance to shine. Just be aware that he moves at a very fast pace!

Class about proofs: how to perform them with a variety of techniques in a variety of situations. Completely new subject matter as far as I was concerned and completely fascinating. Presentation of ideas and concepts was very clear, and given in quite a number of examples to give an idea of the breadth and scope of how they could be used.
