He's a curmudgeon in the best way. So knowledgeable and if you're outspoken and bright, he'll love you. He's been around the block and has a lot to teach. My favorite professor thus far.

Not sure what other rater's criticism is all about..took Serrin for Poverty Politics and Immigration capstone..intimidating only at first. Serrin is a character - hilarious, kind, no bs man who has seen the world an written about it (for the Times mind you). Take him. One of the few I plan on visiting..unless he's in Montana :)

Comment:
Serrin is half senile, idisrespectful, and completely incompetent. If you want to express your opinion his answer is: "I'm the professor, don't argue with me!". He doesn't remember what he said last class, and very often contradicts himself in an absurd way. Generally, he is a disgrace to himself and to NYU, and should have retired a long time ago.

The absolute best. Funny, kind, engaging. Take the class if you can. We had class at his apartment twice, and went to Spamalot. He took us out to dinner in small groups. Plus he knows his stuff and the class was very interesting. Nobody understands his grading, but that's okay. Most definitely take this class if you can.

Prof. Serrin is the best. I turn to him for advice constantly. His past students have come back to talk to the class and are all doing amazing things in journalism.

Comment:
He is so horrible, disrespecting other people's cultures. Always intimidating students, and grade our assignment according to his mood. He needs to learn how to respect others before he teaches in NYU. BTW, I'm glad that he will retire soon, for the sake of NYU journalism department!

How come a well-respected journalist like you could protect professors who illegitimately forbade a student to write about Iraq, Palestine, Israel,Vietnam and withheld grade of an exclusive story about conversation between a Vietnamese journalist and Henry Kissinger? I'm extremely disappointed. Don't hide, pls. All is under the light of conscience.

How did Craig Wolff make you refuse to hear my account about him withhelding my grades illegitimately to force me to take his next class? What did you tell Mary Quigley about my protest against Wolff's quid pro quo harassment so she created a hostile academic environment against me? Good journalist don't protect harasser and discriminator!

By far the best teacher and best class I have ever taken. Serrin is a dream teacher. Fun projects, interesting subject material, plus he totally runs the class based on the needs of the students. On top of everything, he is HILARIOUS and laid back. Do not miss the chance to have Serrin as a teacher!

Professor Serrin is MAGICAL. He makes the materiel somehow very accessible and interesting and yet still challenging. And this is essentially an American History course that counts as a science. The man is so knowledgble and funny and interesting. And he WROTE the textbook. So he knows what he's doing.

Probably the best professor I had at NYU. I took two of his classes and visited him in his office frequently for advice. So kind and so helpful, and very accessible unlike a lot of professors here.
