As a person, I really like Stein. As a professor, not at all. Unfortunately he is extremely unclear and difficult to learn from. His immense knowledge of botany almost gets in the way of his teaching because he thinks the material is so easy that he breezes thru it. But in reality, the whole class is lost. Tests are hard, harsh grader. Nice guy

Extremely knowledgeable in botany, but sometimes doesn't simplify material well. This makes his lectures and expectations unclear at times. Tests are not easy but if you study between his slides and the book it's not too bad.

Lecture is pointless, as is the book. Just print the slides and memorize everything on there. Everyone thinks he's awful, but he's not bad. You just have to study a lot and know everything. Mini-exams really help for the midterm. Lab is a waste of time. Not bad if you're willing to put the work into it.

Bad class, bad professor. Don't take it unless you like plants as much as this guy-- which is A LOT. He knows what he is talking about but assumes that we do too. Not a good teacher. Tests are impossible. Just save yourself and don't take the class, you will suffer through it.

he is the worst professor I have ever had. Never spoke clearly in class, does not communicate what is expected of students, hated answering questions, unhelpful overall. He may be knowledgeable but the students don't get that knowledge. His own TAs seem frustrated with him. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF.

This class was the most outrageous A that I have ever earned. I killed myself for that A. Grading is incredibly subjective, even if an answer is correct, it may be wrong depending on the student. He is never available during office hours, even when you make an appointment. This class The class is much more difficult than it's worth. Don't bother.

He is the WORST teacher to take. If you ever get stuck taking his class drop it immediately. His books and lectures are useless. He doesn't help when you talk to him. Test are easy if you understand every minute detail and i mean every minute detail that he teaches but you still might fail anyway lol

He is a HORRIBLE professor. He gives lectures consisting of incomprehensible ramblings, gets annoyed at questions, and is useless during office hours. He does nothing but babel on and on. The guy could not give anyone a straight answer to save his life. Terrible grader, large parts of the tests are based on radom material not covered in lectures.

Stein mutters during lectures, doesn't like questions, and then tests on the most random, specific details. Poor planning too, we had 2 mini-exams, a midterm exam and a final exam in less than 3 weeks! Avoid this class, it's harder than it has to be and boring on top of it! Be ready to examine slides under microscopes for hours on end...

This class was not easy, but I found that Dr. Stein was clear and reasonable in his expectations. He is willing to help explain things when asked and he is very approachable. If you like biology, you'll find it easy to pay attention in lecture. Just listen to him and take good notes and you'll do fine.

Gilded appearance of a nice guy. "Point system":attendance not needed but takes role call 3 times,5pts each and uses 10 points toward grade.Curved miniexam grades down by 10%. No NOT helpful during office hours, instead rambles and probably won't give you an answer.Mumbles.Pathetic slides poorly done w/just pics and few words. Agree w/post on 12/12.

If you want to teach yourself take this class.Exams are graded by TAs/him; only pages he grades will come back with many points off and no explanation. So when questioned Stein is unhelpful&angry. Exams are memorizing terms/cladograms. Jammed 3 tests in last 3 wks. You won't know grade til end of sem; most people got a B. Cheryl is a wonderful TA.

Very nice guy, eager to help if you go to his office hours. Textbook isn't needed, just memorize his lecture notes, and write what he says. Be prepared to draw out cladograms. Mini exams are very helpful in preparing for the tests. Overall, good class.

WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!! I've never met an ASS like him in my entire 4 years here. He will do everything he can to lower your grades. He curved one of our exams down and tells everybody that it doesn't make a difference. He's a JERK!!! He basically teaches himself during lecture; can hardly hear him, and doesn't care to help his students.

Relatively easy class although there was hardly a curve (maybe half grade curve). Lab is a built in curve since it is so easy to get full credit (about 1/3 of your total grade). The good thing is he posts all he slides online and all you have to do to do well is memorize them (no need to even buy the text book).

The class was easy especially since this was my second course with him. The tests might have been a little poorly worded but the curve was quite generous although not needed to get an A. Lectures are a little on the dry side. If you take his Macroevolution course you'll be at a huge advantage since alot of the material is repeated from that course.

OK, so he re-uses his slides from 117 and treats this like a botany class. Boring! Terrible at explaining things. Doesn't stick to anything, class average is a 50, will he curve? no one knows. Don't waste your time taking this class, or any of his classes, they are always boring, you learn nothing and hurt your GPA. He is a nice guy though.

Stein is a really nice guy, but the guy has no teaching ability and couldn't manage to make dinosaurs interesting. Lecture slides look like they were designed for a kindergarten class. Grading policy: "I'll know what grade you deserve by the end of the semester. There is no formula."
