She was awful. I dropped her halfway through the semester. I was prepared for a lot of homework but what she demands is more than my major related classes demanded. I was told she wasn't this bad in the past but she's unreasonable now. She refuses to help students she doesn't like and will yell at you for asking questions. Avoid her!

I want to like Olenik-sensei, but this class is ridiculous. The format is confusing, and though you'll learn something, your grade will take hits when you don't understand the unclear due dates. She uses three redundant recording formats for (frequent) online assignments; you can have remarkable intelligence and work ethic and still take a GPA hit.

Olenik-sensei is one of the most dedicated teachers I've ever had. She has language circles every week, and if you attend, you will get extra credit towards your final grade. She really wants you to have a passion for language and if you make the effort, you can do well. Don't expect an easy A. Expect to work for it. She makes you feel accomplished

Professor has many good qualities. She's dedicated and makes you want to learn chinese. However.. expect a workload. The syllabus? forget about that, she doesn't even follow it and will throw crazy amounts of homework at you. She's not very prepared too. I don't know about everybody else but this class was hard and she will judge you on attitude.

Wonderful professor! She is very helpful and understanding if you show that you do your work. I was late many times to class but I still got an A. Expect tons of work and to study hard. But you will learn a lot in her class. Assigns oral presentations and vocab quizzes. Tells you assignments ahead of time. Also collects work!

This class takes a lot of dedication. She expects a lot from her students. She gives a lot of quizzes- most of them are oral and reading. She also gives TONS of extra credit assignments. However, she does get angry easily if you do not pay attention. er syllabus is also VERY disorganized and confusing.

I took both Chinese 101 and 102 with 杨老师 during the summer and it was a great experience! It is a lot of work but if you can dedicate the time you will find that it is not as difficult as one might imagine. She is ALWAYS available to help you whether it be online or in class. She's very clear about the assignments and explai

The only people to put negative comments about her are people who don't do their work. Olenik is an amazing Chinese professor. I learned a lot from her this semester, and she is VERY understanding when it comes to your schedule, and is willing to give extensions as long as you establish yourself as a hard worker. Time consuming, but a lot of fun.

Yang laoshi was the best. She made learning chinese fun and easy. She also goes all her way to help you to ensure that you walk out of her class feeling that you know at least the basics on the chinese language. I strongly recommend her. Definitely my favorite class. Take her!

Very good teacher! There is a lot of work to do, but she gives you enough time to do it. HONESTLY the people who were getting bad grades were the ones who never put any effort into the class. The work you have to do is basically the workbook wihch she gives you PLENTY time to do. You learn A LOT! This class was my favorite class of the semester.

Attendance (28%) counts more than your midterm/final (15%). She is very helpful, but the class is very demanding. You have to remember your characters, 4 different tones, pinying, english translation, grammar. It's alot to remember and there's a quiz every week. Don't take chinese if you're not fully committed.

At first when I saw all these negative comments about Prof. Olenik I was ready to drop the class... glad I didn't. She is a great chinese teacher and very knowledgable about the culture as she is a native. Don't believe these comments, she was so generous she even gave EVERYONE an automatic A for the final exam-- we never even took it.

Yang Iaoshi is a really great teacher. She is helpful, nice and makes you more interested in learning chinese. She is simply amazing but don't expect her to be easy. If the class gets too slow, she speeds up making a difficult language even harder to learn. Overall, I would recommend her if one truely wishes to learn Chinese

Insane amounts of work, up to 6 or 7 quizzes per class, unclear teaching, grades you in front of the class, can be patronizing when you don't understand something - really wanted to learn Japanese, but her class completely destroyed my enthusiasm.
