one of the last formalist scholars left at usc, do NOT take if your interest is in the "-isms", he is not interested in much modern literary theory (feminist, marxist, etc) except styles which actual TALK about literature, a relief for some, close minded for others, I found him to be a scholar of similiar interests and a great guy

It's been ages since I took this class (to fulfill a requirement), but I feel I need to correct the opinions expressed above: this professor is, to the right student, about as fascinating a speaker and inspiring a scholar as one could hope for. He's truly smart and very passionate about his subject.

I can't say much about this class as I didn't go after fall break once, but despite that I still pulled a B. If you've always wanted to learn Middle English, this class is for you... if you want an actual general english class, skip it.

I took his honor's class which involved reading Chaucer in middle english and writing papers. It's a challenging class, but he's a great professor who is willing to help. Not terribly exciting but one of the nicest teachers you'll have.

WARNING: For this professor, Epic to Romance means Chaucer's Canterbury Tales read aloud by each student with proper historical pronunciation and inflection all semester long. For some this might sound like fun. I dropped it after the first class.
