I don't think the easiness scale is a very fair one, bc your performance in Chinese is based on how much work you do outside the classroom, but I think he is fair most of the times and tries hard to help you succeed. Also an amusing dude, he gives interesting etymology and can be a lot of fun.

I had him for Great Books of the Eastern World. He sucks. If your opinions don't match his, then you're wrong. I got a D in the class and he said we could go over the "innane details" of my grade if I felt like wasting his time. Don't take him.

I have no idea about his teaching style as far as literature goes, but he was really good in chinese. He knows the subject matter, is interested in it, and tries to convey that to the class. The material is difficult to begin with, but he manages to keep things manageable. Attendance is a must.

I loved Professor Alber in Chinese. I took an English class with him that I didn't like as much, but for Chinese, he is great. He is very helpful with characters and allows a lot of *mistakes* on the test. You must be in class, you must study characters, but overall very good professor.

I worked very hard and had an A average coming into the Final. Straight essay exam which was 60% of the grade and after getting 90 or above on the papers, I got a 60 on the final, making my grade a C. Go figure.
