Comment:

Good person, humorous but lectures are intense with a lot of book reading, group reading and discussion, weekly journals, and studying for weekly quizzes on top of exams like you're studying for your PhD. term paper and a lot of material to complete and hand in. You will learn a lot about music culture but class is intense and stressful at times.

I am going to be honest with you, he is a great guy very funny, very open mind, as a person he is very great. Now as a professor he is a different person, he does know what he is talking about but this class although is somewhat interesting is also a pain in the but, honestly I had to focus more in this class than my Bio class, test are okay notbad

Professor Mangeni is horrible. Is of no help on anything and expects way too much with no exceptions on anything. He comes off as a good guy the first class or two, but don't be fooled. If you are enrolled in his class or was thinking about taking one, Do not. Horrible teacher. Worst class i've taken

Prof Mangeni is an amazing guy. He is a drill sergeant when it comes to practice and study. He can tell when you don't know the material. I had him in middle school and he taught me to play sax. Having him in college was interesting. Just show up to class, listen,write, and occasionally read the book and you'll do fine.

Started off thinking I would like the class, and turned out to hate it. I have never hated a music class in my life. Very inconsistent with grading, never gave feedback on the term paper, and expects everything on short-answers to be word for word. Very condescending. I thoroughly disliked this course and wish I hadn't taken it.

Was the worse professor I had as a freshman, if I had known I would had never taking his class. His test were unfair and hard to understand. He wasn't helpful at all when working of the final exam paper. Biggest mistake ever taking his class, wish I could erases it from my school history.

Intense. Go to every class. He marked five answers on my test wrong even though they were correct according to his lectures and the text, but refused to look at it. Pay attention because he changes what the books state. Be prepared for hours of research in the library. He is picky about wording and spelling. If your answer isn't word for word what he said in the lecture it's wrong. Overall, my worst class ever.

he is a hard professor. Cant ask him questions or he will embarrass you in front of class. CAN NOT be lazy when taking this class. Tests are hard and spelling counts. DO READING AND KNOW THE TERMS!!!

Not bad, but not great. Tests can be difficult and spelling counts, BUT he does scale the grades. Atendance will help you out a lot if you show up and do OK on exams you should be fine. Lots of reading though.

This class was one of the most difficult out of all my Gen Eds. There were 3 books to buy for the class and a ton of reading. His accent makes him difficult to understand and his quizzes and tests are very hard. Spelling counts so make sure you know the terms.

He is a great teacher and knows much about the subject. Most people who take this class think it is going to be easy. It takes some work! His tests are not bad, and he lowered his papers to 5 pages. Dont think youre going to get an A by doing nothing. Most students who dont like him are lazy and dont show up.

He says his rubrics are clear, but change every quiz, and he is unclear on grading. A correct answer one week may be incorrect the next week. Mangeni is a bully, and does not answer questions clearly, and often avoids them and belittles the students when some may just not understand or may want more information on a topic that he can't provide.

You must do work in this class, though I disagree that it is like a PhD course. At times the class can be engaging, other times boring and repetitive. I agree that the professor is difficult to approach with questions. There is a communication barrier for some reason that prevents clear answers to questions and comments.

Professor Mangeni is a very sarcastic and favors certain students if you are not a music major then he will not pay you any mind. I will definetly not recommend him to anyone that is not a music major!!!!He is not understanding whatsoever and tends to go off topic so much and it is truly irritating.

completely unhelpful/unapproachable. makes you feel dumb for asking a question. has an ego like i've never seen in a professor before. reminds me of a bully on the playground. spends more time talking and repeating things not having to do with the class. takes forever to respond to emails. overall just a horrible professor.

Comment:

I can definitely see why so many people have negative things to say about Mangeni but, honestly, this is an easy class and even though he has his quirks, he's a really decent professor and a really nice guy. The people who say negative things are the ones who rarely show up to class, are unprepared and expect to get a good grade anyway.

Horrible class. You need to buy 3 books and do a 10 page paper on nothing. His quizzes are very difficult and if you get spelling wrong then he marks it wrong. Pop quizzes are often and he never gives a word bank.

Highly cultured and very intelligent Ethnomusicologist. Great instructor. Mature and responsible students who do their work will do well and enjoy this instructor.
