If you want grades recorded quickly, do not sign up for Dr. Aplers class. Seriously he entered all our grades after the final. Besides that the class was amazing. You have to like role playing and act the part but this was the highlight of my semester. He was a great teacher, slow grader.

There is a sizable amount of reading in AST but that is to be expected in any perspectives course. People complaining about the reading aren't cut out for this. He does take ages to grade papers and gives harsh feedback, but he gives good grades anyway. Make flashcards about all the authors you read and understand broad concepts and you're fine.

I took Reacting to the Past with him. Participation is absolutely necessary, but it is fun -- one of the best classes I have ever taken. As GM, Alpers participated minimally in the class itself, but he made sure everything went in the right direction. It can be hard to get help, and he takes ages to grade, but it's not a difficult class.

I took American Social Thought with Professor Alpers. He is really cool and nice, but I wouldn't recommend this class unless you are prepared to do A LOT of reading every single week. He was quite slow on grading papers, but always willing to meet to help you out. Discussions were good, but the final exam is KILLER.

very strict grader. not extremely personable. long lectures and abstract discussions. Though he is somewhat helpful in discussing papers, he is hard to please.

Dr. Alpers is a challenging and rewarding professor. His freshman level honors intro courses are some of the hardest you can take, but also the ones in which students really seem to grow as thinkers and writers. He seems intimidating but is actually nice.
