Comment:

She's a brilliant professor and a dedicated advisor. She genuinely cares about your progress and tries to help you in every way possible. It's helpful that she gives many assignments so that you can pull your grades up if you need to. What's more, she really helps you with your writing, which is absolutely necessary in college. Highly recommended.

Comment:

She is undoubtedly a tough grader, but she will improve your writing ability and actually change your outlook on the world. Her lectures were always entertaining and thought provoking. If you care more about knowledge than GPA, I very highly recommend Hsu.

I really loved Professor Hsu. She is definitely a tough grader, but she likes to "see improvement" so your grades are almost guaranteed to go up after the first assignment. The class structure was straightforward - assigned readings for each class and 4 papers. Hsu is tough but cares a lot about her students, and is super enthusiastic. I Recommend.

Comment:

Tough class, but she made Marx comprehensible. Not always "fun," but learned TONS. Expectations for papers are pretty high, but not unreasonable; felt like it pushed me to improve my writing significantly while still doing well. Learned to see sociological theory in action everywhere & made theories of dead white guys applicable & interesting.

Engaging lecturer, assigns a lot of reding. Pretty tough, but doesn't take very long to figure out her expectations. Can be hostile to opinions she does not agree with though. Took her China course as an FSEM, and was a little upset we only covered a samll portion of China's history(Mostly the communist era).

Interesting lecturer, but not always the most engaging. She is definitely helpful and knowledgable outside of the classroom, but the lectures sometime feel like they lack depth. Reading isn't a must for class participation, but is important for the essays.

she doesn't seem to really care about your opinions in class, but nods along. her exams are decieving, shes very picky about answers, and you never quite know where you stand grade-wise in the class. puts a large emphasis on class participation. lectures and rarely goes over reading

I found Professor Hsu to be a wonderful professor. I graduated from Colgate in 2002 and that was her first year! She expected nothing less than excellence and was always willing to help you get there...To the person who said that class participation is a high school expectation...your spending an awful lot of money at Colgate to skip class!

Her seminar is amazing. She is helpful and clear in guiding and helping you create a sociological article. She is totally a catch for the sociology seminar. I have never had her in another class but this one is totally great.

Terrible professor. She's militant about class participation, which is very high school, and should not be expected at the college level. Hsu cannot teach; instead, she lectures without regard to the questions and interest of the class. Do NOT take.
