There are a lot of assignments, five of them to be exact plus a final exam. Definitely no walk in the park, but it is a pretty unique course. The syllabus was unclear, but she really does want you to suceed.

Prof is vehemently anti-technology. Course requires a text that prof does not assign readings from but asks whether we have done readings in class. Syllabus is confusing, class is disorganized, and there are many technical difficulties in lecture. I do not recommend this course/prof.

The more you embrace Colleen the more you'll enjoy the class! She appreciates students' enthusiasm so be sure to show up. The syllabus is very unclear ... BEWARE. It really is about where rock music came from, so don't expect full lectures dedicated to your fav bands. Prepare to learn lots of names in the industry. Recommend taking with friends!

Lots of focus on record labels over evolution of sound; class has plenty to offer. Very unclear criteria on syllabus, particularly for midterm. In-class 800 word essay (3 sources, bring notes and biblio day of). I could give her a longer, better essay if we could do it at home (history major here). Kind person, will help if needed. Archaic style.

Colleen is an amazing character and an even better teacher, she helps you out with questions when you're unclear on what is expected of you, and she loves what she teachers, which makes the class so much more amazing! There are a ton of group presentations (pretty much the entire course), but I loved the aspect and dynamic of the course and Colleen

Colleen's class was interesting. She was usually quite approachablehelpful and I was inspired by the subject matter all the way through. You can tell she's had a crazy life! Wish I could major in rock n roll history. Harder course than I expected- but worth the effort. Lots of group projects. Final is tricky (pay attention when she lectures).

History of Rock and Roll is an easy A elective. She's a pretty easy marker, but super knowledgable about everything music so she can call BS and point out stuff you missed so be thorough. Her lectures are a bit scattered, but the class is mainly student presentations so they don't occur very often.

This class was a huge let down. I thought we were going to learn about the HISTORY OF ROCK N ROLL! Instead, we were given a ton of VERY disorganized lectures, irrelevant student presentations on music genres, and loads of confusing notes. It's an easy A+, just not worth it. Take something interesting instead. Final was super easy too.

I highly recommend taking classes with Colleen. She is an amazing prof, interesting to talk to and a fantastic musician. She is open-minded in discussion and always willing to listen to student's input. She often does her classes in a student presentation style so you teach the class so be prepared to learn a lot about a specific topic. A+ prof!

My favourite prof at uvic. She is an amazing, colourful and overall amazing teacher. I've had her for history of rock and roll and beatles studies and she made both of them interesting and fun to learn. You should know: DON'T TAKE HER CLASS FOR AN EASY A. She is a tougher marker, and she knows if your heart is in your work. She's the best.

Very nice and motherly woman. This class is an easy-GPA booster. However, I was disappointed with the class overall. Lectures were difficult to follow and most student presentations were dull. However, she is incredibly knowledgeable about music and is very interesting to listen to, she's just not a good lecturer when it comes to course material.

Colleen is SO interesting and SO passionate about what she teaches!!! She was great. She expects the minimal (come to class, take notes, etc.) and rewards students who go beyond what is asked. I love Colleen!

This was the best course I have ever taken in school EVER. I had so much fun, I sincerely enjoyed going to class every day. Take this as your upper level elective and you won't regret it!!!! Hardly any work at all, if you pay attention you're guaranteed an A. She "writes tests for those who don't come to class!" Excellent teacher!

Her lectures don't seem to follow a timeline so you get to jump around a lot. The majority of the class is taught through student presentations, which can be frustrating. She's a wonderful and happy person though! The exam was a bit tougher than expected though. So take detailed notes and remember random people's names.

Really funny, sweet woman. Very interesting to listen to, but almost the whole course is taught in the form of student presentations...Course is interesting, however the lack of structure can be frustrating. Her marking schemes are pretty ambiguous and subjective, and her assignment criteria not terribly clear.

She is a passionate and enthusiastic teacher, but decides to let the class "teach itself". This leads to students, most of whom made for boring presenters, talking about music they often had little insight on. The whole reason I took the class was to learn more than I could from a wikipedia page!

worst professor I've ever had. Goes out of her way to make this course as difficult as possible when it should be a fun elective. Avoid all all costs!
