I hoped to learn something about philosophy. Instead, I got a semester-long case study in narcissism.

Want to meet a man with no hope for the future of the earth and degrades every human besides himself because he is the best human in the world? Take a class with this guy. Just be sure to agree with every single thing he says... No questions asked.

By far the one of the worst human beings to ever come into my life. I would never recommend taking a class with him. You MUST NOT eat meat and you MUST ALWAYS agree with him. Never have i felt more degraded by a person let alone a professor who's salary I pay to go here. DO NOT ENTER A COURSE WITH HIM!!! you will regret every second of it.

I don't hate many people... but this guy is such an asshat. He takes a discussion based class and changes it into "Let me tell you about all my experiences and how great I am. YOU ARE ALL UNWORTHY OF MY PRESENCE!!" time. Good thing this pompous ass is going to retire because being right in his class is not possible. Deane is always right.

Most narcacistic prof I have ever had, and yet I enjoyed every second of it. His grading is pretty tough but if you truly want to learn something about world cultures and philosophy take this guy's classes.

i took a couple courses with Dr. Curtin last year as a freshman, and fell in LOVE with philosophy. he has a great way of using class time; half is him summarizing the readings and the other half is discussion. i have so much respect for him, he is by far still my favorite prof ever in college!!

A lot of people have noted that Deane occasionally thinks you are wrong and can be pretty close to insulting. This is absolutely true but you should embrace that. Tell him he's wrong and argue your point well. If you deserve respect he will give it to you and vice versa. He is incredibly refreshing in this way. Great prof and really interesting.

I've never been told that my opinion was wrong before. just flat out dismissed. it's my opinion, right? Turns out, if I didn't see the world his way, i was wrong. This is the worst class I have ever taken.

Curtin's lectures are amazingly interesting. He doesn't ever push his ideas, just presents both sides of the topics. Is very helpful if you show interest and concern on improving your grades. He is a hard grader, but is always there to help. I would recommend Philosophy of the Environment, or any other class he teaches to anyone.

He doesn't clarify very well as to what he wants, and on his papers if you don't agree with him you are deducted. He critiques your own ideas and tells you that they are wrong when its your own opinion. He also told a girl after class that she was a horrible person for expressing what she thought in a discussion.

Curtin's led an interesting life, and always has stories to share. It seems like lecture usually turns from a discussion into a debate: him vs. students, so make sure you can back up your opinions before you give them. Sort of a tough grader... make sure you always get started early on papers to get feedback from him / the writing center.

One of the great professors at Gustavus. Has a lot of background knowledge on things that might be dry. Makes class very interesting. Extremely helpful on papers. He's a tough grader, but he'll work with you as much as you want and it's possible to improve your grades. Socially conscious, but he does so much to present both sides it's hard to tell.
