Among the best lecturers at the school one of the my challenging classes I have ever taken work hard and you will get through it, utilize office hours, read the text, do the homework twice with a significant amount of effort, I can honestly say I have certainly learned the material and understand the concepts better than ever before

Read the other negative reviews. My experience was almost identical to some of the reviews I read. ie. getting marked down substantially for my name being on the top right margin instead of VERY top of page, and for uppercase letters that were not large enough even though everyone else I showed unanimously agreed they were uppercase. Get out!!!

Doesn't provide out of class practice so you'll need the textbook for extra practice and examples, a very very tough grader

Dr. Rahn teaches entry level chemistry and expects professional level chemistry students. He is never clear on what he's asking for and always beats around the bush. He enjoys making students feel intimidated and not good enough. On the first day of school he assured us that anyone who wants to be a doctor wont make it. Dont waste your $ or time.

This professor is the worst teacher I have ever had. I am very good at chemistry and was even asked to be a chemistry tutor at my last college, credits didnt transfer so I had to take the class. Only two people passed the class and its because it was there second time they took it. Save yourself the money and time and take it with someone else.

Rahn gets a bad rap for being tough. Yes, his class is very challenging, but if you read the book, pay close attention in all his lectures (stuff from class demos show up on tests!), and talk to him during office hours, you'll do just fine. Be prepared to work more for your grade, but feel a lot better about the grade you earn in the end if you try

Rahn shouldn't be teaching an entry level chemistry class. When students ask questions,he rarely gives a straight answer & has told a student they were wrong and did not provide why. Went to him for help on a lab & told him I didn't understand; he watched me fill out the lab and didn't comment when I asked if anything was wrong. Got an F on the lab

Comment:
I usually love chemistry but Rahn made me hate it this quarter. He has marked me off multiple points because my C's on Co weren't double the size of the O. Tests are super difficult and often take more time than given. He tends to write stuff on the board wrong and change it after he has already explained everything, making it super confusing.

Comment:
Professor Rahn himself is a cool guy and a more then decent teacher. However tests are extremely difficult and almost impossible. every question seems to always be a trick question or is made extremely difficult so that there isn't enough time to finish tests. Labs are graded extremely hard as well.

Dr. Rahn is my favorite professor at EWU. He is a very picky grader but his tests come straight from lecture and the homework so go to class and take good notes. Taking Dr. Rahn does not automatically mean a bad grade. I got a 4.0, You just have to be willing to work hard and practice a lot. You will come out knowing the material very well.

I took Dr. Rahn's chemistry class my first year in undergrad in 2010. I learned so much from him that when I went to grad school for chemistry, I knew more chemistry than the other students. If all you want is a good grade choose someone else. Want to learn chemistry? Take it from him

Dr. Rahn is hard, but not imposible. His tests always end up being harder than they seem like they're be, so study! He's really picky about labs and requires you to be very accurate and precise to get all the points. He's not an awful person though, and his class isn't impossible: I got a 3.9 without taking a previous chem class.

Comment:
Dr. Rahn grades unbelievably hard. You can get the right answer but receive minimal points for ticky tacky errors like significant figures. He often writes things incorrectly on the board making it confusing to take notes from him. his tests are long and, at times, far derivatives from the homework. Just don't take him unless you have to.

My favorite professor. He made sure you knew the material thoroughly. He's a tough grader, but only because he tests little details like irregularities, nuances, exceptions, etc. He is not a class for those who don't like to work hard or will not go to the professor for help. Was super helpful even though I never once went during office hours.

Great professor. His lectures are clear, and example problems are very easy to follow in notes later. Willing to meet outside of office hours, and is very helpful with questions on homework or labs. Start homework early, do all the odds at the end of the chapter. Taking the Gen Chem series with him left me very well prepared for O Chem.

Most people assume the worst when it comes to him. Let me assure you he is one of the best lecturers at EWU and is actually really nice/helpful outside of class. He is very clear and extremely knowledgeable in his field. If you want to actually learn and retain information, take his class! His tests are really hard so study study and go to PLUS grp

First off he is very rude if you ask him a question in class. Second,he will take points off for stupid stuff. Next, homework and even the examples in the book are nothing in difficulty compared to his tests. He is also inconstant in his grading from student to student. if he likes you you will get a better grade.

Comment:
He deliberately makes the exams as difficult as he can (much harder than in class examples, and harder than the homework problems) and includes as much extraneous chemistry information that he can. He then "nitpicks" every little thing, so that even if you get the answer correct you don't get full credit for it.
