Dr. Jacobs gave good, thorough lectures that aligned perfectly with the homework. Her quizzes were perfectly fair, as well. Her exams, however, were unrealistically specific and difficult. She stresses "mastery" above all things, and grades very harshly. You probably have better chances winning the Mega Millions than getting a C in her class. >:(

Jacobs is TOUGH. Don't take her and expect an A because you probably will not get an A unless you really work for it. She actually is an amazing teacher, and you will learn a ton if you take her class. She comes off a little rude at first, but if you respect her and get to know her shes really cool. She wants you to learn, but wont be easy on you.

SO RUDE. Tried to answer a question, with the correct answer, and she cut me off and told me how I couldn't be more wrong then proceeded to tell another student how it was a great explanation. He used the exact wording I was. Clearly favors those who do well in class and is condescending to those who don't. She's the most petty grader I've met yet.

Great lecturer... HORRIBLE person. She is absolutely mean to her students other than a select one or 2 girls. She encourages questions and yet rarely answers them without insulting you in front of the class. Repeatedly puts people on the spot to answer questions on material you are still learning, gets mad if you're unsure. Not easy to talk to.

Tons of homework is assigned but barely even matters to the overall grade. Exams are graded harshly and will never be curved. The homework and problems done in class are very different from the exam. If you lean best through repetition you will have a hard time with her tests. Puts students on the spot and flames them during lecture. Nice lady lol

Comment:
Dr Jacobs is very strict about technique on homework and tests. She definitely knows her physics and is organized in teaching. Does not have much tolerance for questions, she encourages them but can be rough on a student asking the "wrong" questions in her mind. Frequent group quizzes, weekly homework. This class is a huge time commitment.

Dr. Jacobs was passionate about the subject and had a good sense of humor. However, there was a heavy and fast-paced workload, the tests were difficult, and the grading was harsh. Dr. Jacobs is not a terrible professor, but you better make darn sure you have immaculate study habits, or you may get overwhelmed and anxious like I did.

If you are not incredibly devoted to physics and willing to put in an excessive amount of time for this course, I would advise that you avoid Jacobs AT ALL COSTS. She talked over the heads of most of the class and did not have alternative explanations available. Good students were failing tests and I don't think we were wholly to blame for that.

Please stay away from this teacher. I don't think I even have words for how much I didn't like the class or the professor. She was rude. Her exams were nearly impossible to pass. You will cry just to get a C in here. If you do have to take her, make sure you make friends in the class to help you. Just thinking about this class makes me cry

Very challenging class. Homework and exams were more difficult than in-class problems. I agree with the previous poster that she is rude, and does show favoritism. Despite that, I think the class was great. I wish more classes at EMU held students to such a high standard. Be prepared to do a lot of work outside class.

I enjoyed the rigor of the course, but did not care for the bad personality of the teacher. This lady can be very rude. She truthfully makes students feel uncomfortable when asking questions and going to office hours. She also seemed to favor some students over others. I noticed that just by watching her for 15 weeks. Beware.

Dr. Jacobs IS really passionate about physics, but in a little kid sort of way. To take this class you have to have a sense of humor, as she makes a lot of jokes. She is pretty funny, and the only reason she picks students out is so she knows they actually get the material and she teaches to all kinds of learners. Easy to talk to, very forgiving.

Unprofessional, demeaning to those who ask questions, and seems to have a real chip on her shoulder. Attendance is not mandatory but cutting class is ill-advised. Only take this prof. if absolutely necessary. I spent 3x as much time on this class than my other three combined and still came out with a 'B' (and was thankful for that).

I feel so bad for all the kids in my class this semester(2nd time taking class), 1st time i got a b but failed lab. She is too passionate about physics, and covers unnecessary information that confuses students. Very few students finish tests in time, the rest look completely lost, the tests are 90% unlike the lecture/homework. P.s. one kid sniffle

Jacobs is a brilliant physicist, but a terrible teacher. Her tests are 80% of the grade and she does a pretty poor job of preparing you for them. Homework is mandatory if you want to dream of passing this class, but still has less then nothing to do with the test. Doing it over again, I would wait for a different teacher to teach this class.

Evil takes a human form in Diane Jacobs. I am a physics teaching minor/math major, so I was prepared to take this class and put in plenty of effort. She picks one student to make fun of all semester long--in my class, it was an autistic kid. Moves too quickly; is rude to students. Smart though--belongs in a lab, not a classroom! Disgrace to EMU.

I cried more from this class than probably all four years of high school. I usually love all my teachers, but Professor Jacobs was known for making us feel stupid. "You sure you are ready for college level work?" I was very disappointed :(

I feel that a lot of people who took one of her classes expected it to be a joke. This is not the case. She does a good job of making you think and apply yourself. If you want an easy A, look somewhere else - you have to earn it here.

dr. jacobs is extremely knowledgable, but tests tend to have nothing she covered in lecture or text. Extremely rigid classroom settings. She has demonstrated gender and racial biases in final grading. Minority students beware.
