Comment:
I had Doug for a 500 level nonfiction class. He gave minimal feedback on my essays and non-existent feedback on the critiques I turned in for other people. He barely controls workshop in class and often only left 10 minutes for the last person. The books he had us read were the most educational part of the class.

Comment:
Before taking this course, I did not have a high appreciation for poetry. Doug truly changed my opinion by the end of the semester, due to the classes being so focused and centered on discussion. He facilitated the discussions without forcing his opinions on any student. Tough grader, but I ultimately took so much away from this class. Recommended.

Mr. Crawford-Parker made poetry interesting, but I had an average of 5 hours per week in homework outside of class. The homework consists of page long journal entries that cover the reading for the night. You have to do this 3 times a week. He grades hard on the papers, but if you do the work and show up to class, you won't fail.

Dry subject matter and boring content. Takes forever to grade papers and grades them hard. Lots of reading assigned for each class. Don't take if you're looking for an easy A or just to get a credit out of the way.

Parker only focuses on analysis; you will not write your own poetry. He's a very thorough grader. The workload compounds heavily if you don't keep up. If you want a guaranteed A, try a different professor. If you really want to develop your writing/analysis skills, Parker is probably the best prof. for that.

Smart and dry sense of humor. The people rating him really poorly are idiots. He grades tougher that most, but he will work with you to improve.

Good professor who challenges you but doesn't make it ridiculous. People complain that he doesn't answer questions clearly, but that's because he wants you to think for yourself. There's a lot of reading, especially later on in the course, but it's not much more than other English classes. Put in effort and do all the homework and you'll be fine.

I did not like him as a professor. His class was extremely boring, and we had a ridiculous amount of reading due each class period. He is a harsh grader on papers, and his expectations are often unclear. Journal entries and class participation are easy points, so make sure you do them. I also recommend doing the extra credit assignments. Good luck.

Extremely slow to grade things and get them returned. Attendance is mandatory, which sucks because class is very boring. All you really have to do is keep a journal and write papers, so make sure you stay on top of reading the books!

I took the online poetry class and his grading was really harsh. I have never gotten grades this bad in english. There is no rubric so I don't know where the missing points came from. I resubmitted an assignment with 2 forgotten paragraphs (including conclusion) after getting 98 points/130 and he gave me only 4 more points. Absurd really.

DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! He returns ALL papers late and grades harshly. Until this class, I had received ONE B on a paper in my entire life...I received a B- on the first paper and had to struggle throughout the rest of the class to meet his unrealistic, unclear standards.

*non-fiction writing* Great class! Really helpful and encouraging toward student writing. He's fine if you turn in work late - as long as you do it in a reasonable amount of time.

This is the easiest class I have taken at KU, but expect to fall asleep every class. You just have to write a few papers, memorize three short poems and recite them to the class, and the final is three, two-paged papers.

This teacher is pretty good. Work load was reasonable, and he wasn't hard on people who turned stuff in late, as long as they turned it in. In general, he was encouraging to the students and their writing. Plus, although he is a writer, he never talked about his own writing, which was nice.

Worst and most boring class ever. Repetitive questions on homework. If you ask a question, you almost feel ridiculed. He never hands back anything hardly. It took almost 2 months to get our papers back. No idea of how you're doing in the class. VERY BORING. Stupid assignments, readings, group discussions, and in class activites. But, he grades ok.
