Comment:
Gary is great but we don't get to see his brilliance in this specific course. All classes involve two student presentations and Gary says almost nothing. On most days it's hard to stay engaged and listen to these two long presentations. All readings for the semester come from one giant primary source, which gets intensely boring after like week 4.

Gary is the best. His ID1 is an amazing discussion based class on the European Enlightenment and I definitely feel Enlightened. He is extremely knowledgable, take advantage of his office hours, he's amazingly helpful and gives great feedback on essays. The class is hard with a lot of reading and difficult essays but you'll be a better writer after.

I've taken two of his classes, and I'd take more if my schedule allowed for it. He gives the best writing feedback I've seen from any professor: I've turned absolutely horrendous first drafts, and he still tried his best to give useful feedback. Lots of papers, and reading, though. The readings are usually excellent, though! 10/10 would recommend!

Knowledgable professor and likes students to form their own conclusions as long as it can be based on what's written in the text. He does grade harshly, though, so if you're looking for an A be forewarned. Not impossible, just tough.

Gary is the sh*t. He knows the material better than most professors I've had at the 5c's and is obviously hugely passionate about both the information and about students' learning. Makes himself very available outside of class and even makes an effort to get to know his students beyond their name and grade in the class. One of the best professors.

Great professor! Super approachable and always willing to listen and help. Makes the material relevant and enjoyable. One of the best classes I have taken at any of the 5Cs!

Although Modern Europe post 1789 is a survey course that covers a lot of material, I came away with a strong foundation in European history. Kates knows the material like the back of his hand, is very approachable and gives great tips about writing and how to ace his tests!

Fantastic professor. Guides class discussions and adds his own commentary, but also allows lots of student participation (Disclaimer: this is the only discussion class I've had at Pomona). Lots of reading, although you can pick and choose which readings you use for the papers. Open to various approaches to paper writing. Take a class from him!

Usually my favorite class to be in. If you like discussions, it's for you. If you rarely talk and would prefer a lecture, then probably not. He likes to play devil's advocate and will frequently lead you in the wrong direction intentionally. However, he will always correct you if need be. A tough grader on papers, but not impossible.

He is a very positive guy, who just wants people to benefit from his class. It's clear that he knows a lot, but he doesn't use the class to show off his knowledge. He lets you come to your own conclusions. Good prof!
