If you take him plan on taking his class very seriously and attending EVERY class. He expects participation and can be harsh on you if he can tell you're a slacker. If you come prepared and read the assigned hw you have a chance of surviving, otherwise this class will make your life miserable

Comment:

Loved him, though it's easy to hate him. Very funny, VERY hard, but I learned more from him than any other prof here, and not just about the topic: I learned valuable study and writing skills. He'll respect you if you show up EVERY day and show you read VERY thoroughly. Find someone who had him before to get a feel for his tests, first one's hard.

You will be his pet if you are a History major, otherwise he assumes you are an idiot. Keep up with the readings, and quote him in your papers, otherwise you will find it difficult to get a decent grade.

This guy is too smart for his own good, and for the students. I guess he is a good teacher but he is very narrow minded towards history, pretty much his answer is the only right one. This class was very hard and stressful.

If you like history and love reading about it, then take this class. However, if you're not up to date on your history, I recommend you don't even consider this class. There is no written homework, but there is a TON of reading that you have to keep up with. The grade is based on 4 essays alone that you do in the class. And 3 missed class = F.

not easy!! a lot of reading, but as long as you really do your job and participate during class, you should be fine! his 1st test is graded very harsh, this is just bec is on his book, the rest are ok. it helps too see him outside the class too, he is pretty understanding!!

Huppert does not tolerate slacking or absence. However, it is very clear, if you attend class, exactly what he expects in your essays. Do all the reading and see him in his office if you aren't happy with a test grade - he'll explain what you did wrong. As long as "Did you actually do the reading?" doesn't bother you, and you show up, he's great

He is a fantastic teacher. He will not tolerate slackers or people looking for an easy grade. Any of his bad reviews were probably students like that. He loves his subject, is passionate in his teaching style and very fair if also very demanding. I wish all profs were like him. Read his book too. It is fantastic.

Required reading is interesting. He explains the subject quite enthusiastically, is proficient, and is helpful outside of class. Testing is fair and open book. He expects you to know the topic if you are in class. It has been a few years since but I can still remeber what I learned. Take him if you want to learn and not just collect a grade

Brilliant mind. Sharp and incisive. You learn with Huppert. But beware! Has a 'drill-sergeant' attitude with students. Often rides roughshod over apathetic students. Not for the weak or faint-of-heart.
