I thought Jan was a really good prof. He is a very intelligent man, and he picked enjoyable works for us to read. He was funny and interesting, and he didn't take himself too seriously. He also commented extensively on papers, which made it easier to correct mistakes the next time. Definitely take his class!

He is very opinionated and an unfair marker. His classes are a waste of time and if you engage in his discussions he marks you lower. He really enjoys the power of the pen. If you have a choice, don't take his class you'll regret it.

He seemed like a really nice guy in the beginning, but things changed. He doesn't really like to listen, ex. we were having a discussion in class and this a native english class, one native guy and myself(metis) were agruing a point with him and he kept interupting us both and we moved on not ever getting to finish agruing our point.

This class was unbelievably difficult to get through. At a 200 level, I was expecting intro lit theory and this was not the class. Jan was constantly trying to get a discussion going, but no one felt comfortable talking, out of fear of sounding stupid. Would have helped to have taken Philosophy, psychology, & other lit theory courses first.

Jan is a really nice man. His classes are at times very boring but his lectures are funny at times. He's really interesting to listen to, and is really smart and knowledgeable about many topics. In my class we got to write our final essays on television shows which I found really cool. Highly recommend Jan to everyone. He's also a fair marker.

Interesting Prof. I like his class and he is a good prof. Very straight forward and class discussions are quite interesting. He is very helpful when you go up to him for essay help and stuff. He seems like a fair marker but since he hasn't given any grades out yet, I can be wrongtoo~ but i would highly recommend him! =)

Class with Jan is not an easy, gimme type of class. That said, the discussions are interesting, and the pain he puts you through as far as how hard he marks definitely pays off. Highly recommended.

This professor almost made me want to change my major. He destroyed everything I like about English. He basically used his class as his own political platform, and if you disagreed with anything he said, he would give you a bad mark. Avoid him.

Oh my lord, he is a very tough marker, boring to listen to, and has horrible essay topics. He also seems to get a bit angered when you ask him for clarification, very arrogant.

Jan's classes are interesting and funny... but sometimes hard to follow becuase he jumps from topic to topic. As far as essays go, I think he is a fair marker. I am enjoying the class, and would reccomend him.

I'm taking his class right now, I agree that you should avoid him like the plague. We're doing poetry right now. He makes me mad because he thinks that there is only one explanation of the poem(his). Poetry is meant to evoke your imagination. If you have enough support you should be good to write a paper but not in his class!!!

If you did well in English in highschool, be prepared to have your marks go down. He's very opinionated, doesn't like papers written any other way than his own. He's a nice enough person, funny and his classes arn't boring, but as a teacher...I would definately steer clear. (if your in his class make sure to write about art and music...he loves it)

Jan is an excellent instructor. It's true, he is a tough marker. An instructor you have to write for, but the challenge will certainly make you a better writer. His lectures are varied and extremely extertaining and he's always ready to hear opinions from students. He's also very helpful.

The worst course I've even taken. He's so mean on the marks and even unreasonable. He didn't teach anything useful in class but just let us showing our opinions. Just feel suffering in this course.

He's pretty decent. If you prefer group discussions to lectures, he's great. If you like a little more structure, I wouldn't go with him.
