Each week is a different film, but you don't actually have to see the film to know what's going on, reading wiki synopsis will usually do. Quizzes first 4 weeks about various aspects of film. outline a film (essentially its scenes), midterm, write a paper on it (but you MUST understand its meaning, otherwise youre screwed)- worth a lot of the grade

Read the book! I got behind on the quizzes and spent the semester catching up with papers because I never read the book. She might seem cold at first, but she is nice person, loves what she does, and picked pretty decent films. I'm a bad student, most of the class got an A or B, put some effort into it and you'll be fine.

Very knowledgeable and personable. There's a dark sarcasm behind some of her comments towards students which might be perceived as mean, though. Nevertheless, I'd recommend her.

Prof Roan is pretty cool. She has a decent knowledge of film and was helpful throughout the semester. The work itself is fairly easy, especially if you have interest in film (in which case you'll get good grades). 4 quizzes, midterm, film segmentation, and large final paper. Films were hit or miss for the most part...

She is such an awesome teacher. She is very well organized and keeps you intrigued! Do the reading because she has 4 quizes in the beg. of semester. I only watched about 3 total films, all the others I just read a synopsis on and still passed the quizzes. You only have two papers in the class (besides the 4 quizzes).

Very nice woman. Extremley helpful. Lots of reading, but reasonable requirements: six short papers and a final exam. Attendance counts for 25%. I wish I had taken more courses with her during my time at Mason, which sadly, is comming to an end in May.

If you have a serious interest in learning about film, do NOT take this class with her. Limited film knowledge and I found myself correcting her. The oldest film that was screened was from the 80's. If you really want to learn about film and want something out of this class, dont take it... you will not benefit from taking it.

This class will keep you pretty busy with the assigned reading (pretty heavy sometimes) and the films you are required to watch. Roan is extremely knowledgable and enthusiastic when it comes to the material and seems to always be in a great mood. This class is really interesting but I did feel a little lost sometimes.

Enjoyed the subject, but her discussions can be a little strange, her lectures can seem more like conversations. Lots of small assignments, HUGE take home final, a fair amount of reading and watching films.

Dr.Roan is an awsome professor. This is the second course I have taken with her and it was great. I highly recommend taking any of her courses. She makes the class interest and fun. I would actually look forward to going to class.

She's nice but kind of strange. Sometimes it seems like she's just talking to herself, not a class. She picked an OK lineup for our film series but it had some real bombs. She is very detailed in what he looks for and she expects you to be familiar with certain scenes frame by frame. Somewhat easy.

Prof. Roan is a very good teacher. She encourages class discussions and likes to hear your opinion. She is fair grader. There are a lot of papers and a lot of reading assignments. She admits that the workload is heavy at times but motivates the students to keep focused.

Fun class -do the readings if you can, pay attention and participate. She lets you share personal experiences and the topic is great if you want an intro to movies and film. Second half of the semester is more interesting.

Course was pretty technical for an English class. She is smart, fair, and knows her stuff, down to the frames-per-second kind of details. You MUST read and know the material. She can seem distant, but she's not. I really enjoyed the class and the prof.
