Comment:
Kevin's strict, but fair. Once you get to know him and prove yourself, you couldn't ask for a better professor. He has no patience for slackers and doesn't tolerate fools; but in grad school, that's a good thing. Do the work, ask for help if you need it, and participate in class, and you'll get a great deal out of the time you spend with him.

Definitely one of the most difficult professors at Chapman. Keep up with the reading; he will give reading quizzes daily including the most obscure questions. Mid-Term and Final exams are reasonable by expect to use all the time provided. Attend class regularly and be involved in the discussions and you will be fine. No room for laziness.

This class was difficult, but manageable. O'Brien often refers to himself as "fiendish" and it is somewhat true. However, if you go to class, pay attention, do the reading, and participate you should be fine.

Best Professor I've had, he is extremely intelligent and interesting. If you ask for help and honestly try he will bend over backwards to make sure you do well in the class. Can't speak more highly of him.

I'm sorry, but who is signing up for an English class so that the professor can hold their hand and tell them that they are the greatest writer to ever walk the face of the earth? O'Brien is honest and he is not ashamed of revealing how much he knows about lit.Do the reading and accept criticism: he will be very helpful for the future.

Prof. O'Brien conducted the first graduate literature class I took. He retained me to the University and was an outstanding instructor in every way. His knowledge and love of literature, especially the great Russian novelists, is unsurpassed. He played a very important role in making me the writer and teacher I am today.

I was forced to withdraw from the class because his quizzes killed, his grading policy killed me, and his personality killed me. I can't stand this guy or his teaching style. He should be fired.

He's meticulous and not insecure. He can be brutally honest and when people are wrong in class he does not waste time, he just clarifies. I would say 9/10 times he knows what he's talking about. I learned more from him than any professor at Chapman and I am not an English major. He is tough so if you are weak do not take his class

Comment:
A bit insecure and anal. He asks for your opinion, but when you give it, he disagrees with it and tries to humiliate you. He picks out the most insignificant details in literature and harps on them almost exclusively. Insists he wants to help you, but comes off rude when you do in fact ask him for help. I'd avoid.

I learned more in his class than most others. He is opinionated and right on, he knows what he's talking about. The class is not for the weak. His office hours are where you learn depths as well. Excellent and intelligent teacher.

Literally worst teacher i have ever had at chapman, extremely insecure to the point of interrupting others in the middle of sentences...gives random quizzes on words and points in the readings, extremely opinionated on everything, especially films and books that he has NEVER READ...if you don't want to waste your time avoid this class at all costs

I am mixed on my opinions of O'Brien. His class had a lot of reading, but it was generally easy if you kept up on the text. He made it very clear what he expected of the students. He was a little harsh on grading essays. He was helpful on the midterm though. The whole class didn't do well so he gave us all a re-test.

Most people hated this class, but I loved it. If you are the kind of person that likes to read and discuss in a group then things will be easy. The reading load is heavy, but as long as you keep up it's not hard to get an A. Also it helps if you're good at analyzing literature for an essay. Not the easiest, but definitely interesting.

O'Brien is simply one of Chapman's best professors, and is a great person too. He is always willing to meet with students to help. He is devoted to his classes and likewise expects that people do the reading. His tests aren't hard if you've paid attention in class.
