One of the best professors (and classes) at Duke! Professor Stiles is extremely knowledgeable and widely respected in her field. You get exposed to so many theories and contemporary art movements. There's also the chance to do a research paper on any topic of your choosing. I would heavily recommend taking this course!

Lectures can often be confusing and Prof. Stiles contradicts herself a lot, but the content is really cool and overall she's a hysterical and inspiring person. Definitely not an easy A but, if you work hard, you'll get the results you want

I took Prof. Stiles course through the inter-institutional agreement between Duke and NC State and I'm so glad I did. I'm grad student applying to the PhD program at Duke and she has been so helpful in helping me actualize my voice. I enjoyed working on the exhibit for the Nasher for her class. She can be tough, but she's supportive of students.

This was an amazing class and I would definitively take it again. Some concepts are hard to wrap your mind around and Prof. Stiles is not the most clear person when explaining them. However, she is incredibly knowledgeable. Her class will definitively challenge the way you perceive the world.

Kristine is a fantastic professor. She had me hooked on the VMS major after the first lecture of the semester, and led me to change from what I was doing before. The class includes some difficult readings, but she explains them well in lecture. Not a particularly difficult class if you keep up with the material, which is mostly fascinating.

Easily the best professor I've had at Duke and probably will ever have at Duke. She is beyond incredible, interesting, and mind-stimulating. I would HIGHLY recommend taking this class whether you plan on becoming a VMS major or not (although she is the reason I'm a VMS major).

Incredible professor, quite possibly the best professor I've ever had. If you take the time to do the work well and to ask thoughtful questions, she will change the way you think, the way you see the world. Immediately changed my major to VMS after taking her Intro course and got to have her for my Theories - absolutely brilliant.

Great lecturer. Initially I was a little hesitant with the subject matter, but in the very first lecture she completely changed my mind. Prof. Stiles will inspire you if you give her a chance. She can be intimidating, and will only take you seriously if you show her some depth, but she's a great prof.

Kristine is amazing!!! She will challenge you and revels in you challenging her. If you don't speak up, you are probably not engaged enough to care. She makes you wanna care about whatever topic is being discussed and honestly wants to know your opinion. Just be able to defend it. She hands down has been the best professor I ever had!!

She's an INCREDIBLE lecturer and also gets great guest lecturers. She can be intimidating, but it's worth it. Visual studies was a fantastic class-different than anything else I've done at Duke, and really changes the way you look at the world, even if at the beginning you think there's no way it will. I actually looked forward to going to lecture.

Prof. Stiles is brilliant and captivating. Most engaging lecturer I've had, and most encouraging person one on one (As long as you genuinely want to learn, and not just make an A.) Take any class you can with her, it'll change your life.

Excellent teacher. She picks great T.A's too. Took the intro to visual culture class during its first year. Amazing class. Really makes you think and see the world completely differently. Tough grader on papers and quizzes, but luckily alot of the grade in the class is based on participation and effort

She's brilliant, engaging, and funny -- one of the smartest Profs I've had so far. At first the class sounded wierd, but now after taking it I'm sooo glad I did. The class teaches you much more than art, it teaches you about human nature and life. She cares about her students and will do whatever is necessary for them to achieve.

She is BRILLIANT - her lectures are interesting and she encourages you to think outside of the norm. I have learned so much from her class about modern art and also about social & ethical issues. The best professor I have had, she makes you want to work

(also ARH 168 & Theories Seminar)--fabulous. She teaches you how to see & how to think, not what to see and what to think. You'll get the most out of her classes as a junior or senior.
