Comment:
Maria was a character, a tough one that is. Her stories about her life were very inspirational and I respect that in a teacher. Sociology 1 with Maria Tapia changed the way I looked at people and I have more respect for people and what they do:) really recommend

Felt that my intelligence was insulted every class. Course content dragged out over weeks what could have been covered in one day's reading. Covers basic topics as if we've never heard of them (race is a social construct? What?), refuses to allow any kind of meaningful discussion, lectures the whole class. Would not recommend at all!

Absolutely BAD grader! She can say that your paper (or presentation) is excellent, and that you don't need to change anything; but you end up with a B. Beware!

Lectures a lot and mostly goes over reading, but reading is really interesting. Spent more time on cultural than bio or arch, which suited me. Great anecdotal info. Very clear about what she expects (papers and exams). She could lead more discussion, but never cuts off discussions, so start talking!

I love Prof. Tapias. She lectures a lot, but it is interesting and is open to discussion. She is very clear about her expectations. I would definitely recomment her for the intro class and I'm sure she is great for upper-level classes as well.

She is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She has no idea how to conduct discussion, assigns too much reading, and generally failed. Aside from being extremely rigid and unengaging, she is boring as hell.

This class was great, she was really in her element. She was very interesting and told us a lot of anecdotal info that made the class exciting

Life course class had generally good readings, but classes were more boring then they should have been because discussion wasn't well directed.

I hear she's good for medical anthro, but avoid her intro class like the plauge, it is boring as all get out. You go back over the reading, with nothing interesting added.

Long lectures in intro on exactly what was read in the textbook for hw. upper level classes that she has an interest in are less boring, and she picks some great books

She lectured for an entire semester, but there was so much to learn that it never got boring. Excellant intro, nothing like most ANT/SOC profs here.

Maria is much easier on intro students than advanced ones, but when she teaches an advanced class that she really knows something about (like medical stuff) she can be lots of fun. in intro, mostly lecture, but good lecture.
