He has a passion for MATH, but not a passion for TEACHING. His lectures are very difficult to understand, so be prepared to schedule tutoring sessions at the Pollak Library. He expects students to know a good amount of Calculus prior to his class. When I tried asking questions, he explained it in the same over-complicated way.

Paul deland uses the text they use at harvard. He has abstrace questions on the homework and u ask him for sample probleMs to review to learn the material and he tells u to just ponder it long enough with your brain and u can figure it out, and that he only providessamples in the text. Then quiz and tests don't look to much like the homework.

Honestly, he is a really good professor. He is passionate about his work, albeit a bit harsh if you fall asleep. He knows his stuff and is very, very kind to people who utilize his time right. I went to one of his review hours, and he was extremely patient with very stupid questions. Would recommend, if you're willing to learn and put effort.

His tests and quizzes really aren't as difficult as people keep on saying they are. As long as you study and understand the material, you'll do well ! Attend the 1-2 hour practice sessions before every exam and ASK if you have any questions, preferably after class. Math is not my best subject but I did all this and got an A + in the class !

This class gives a LOT of homework; however, it is beneficial if you actually spend hours to work on it. The tests and quizzes aren't horrible if you study. I have never spent this much time studying for a class before, literally at least 2 hours DAILY. Difficult class but if you work hard you'll do well ! Beneficial for Business majors.

I honestly don't understand why this professor has a low rating. This is calculus so of course the class will be difficult but if you do the work and put in the effort you won't have a problem with passing. Professor Deland is clear with his lectures and willing to help. There's a lot of hw & quizzes every Friday but it benefits you for the exams.

DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!! This was an extremely difficult class. The teacher teaches the class as if you already should have taken Calc or some higher math. The tests were very VERY difficult and so many students ended up dropping the class towards the middle and end of the semester.

Never had took calculus before, but I'm decent at mathmatics. His quizzes and midterms are basic, do and study the homework and you'll pass them. Online homework takes A LOT of time, but helps on tests. I took the workshop class and the extra practiced helped A LOT. Final is very hard! I had an A the whole class (great scale), till the final.

Don't take this professor!!! Assigns a bunch of online and written homework that is very time consuming! Quiz every week. Lectures are horrible so I barely even understand my own notes, uses different notation from author of book, don't like being asked questions. Tests are hard! If ur not a math major, don't take this professor?

As dept chair, he is a major pain -- very aloof, harder to see that other dept chairs, doesn't deal w/ personnel complaints other than to shoot the messenger, doesn't listen and is very self-righteous and prone to making personal attacks. About the best thing that can be said is, that as dept chair, he isn't in the classroom. Someone to avoid.

Great instructor!! The class was hard, but it is with any professor. He grades your homework and gives weekly quizes. He really forces you to learn the material. For 150B you really need an instructor like that. His tests are hard, but do-able and he did curve. His lectures are extremely oragnized and clear. One of my favorite teachers!

Tough class but more hard to follow than anything. Teacher is confusing and disorganized. Made us feel as though we were wasting his time by asking questions. Don't know why he bothered to come to class at all. Would've been easier to be taught by my dog.
