I absolutely love Holquist and I am so sad that he is ditching us for UPenn. His imperial Russia seminar was one of the best classes I've ever taken, and he just loves to teach and wants you to learn. What a huge loss to Cornell's history department!

Imperial Russian History - Prof Holquist is a very intelligent and engaging teacher. He assigns a tough workload and if you do not like to read you will not like his class. But, because he is so stimulating - and the works are so excellent - he will thoroughly encourage you and before you know it you'll be in love!

Really nice guy, energetic, passionate about Russia, but make sure you really love Russia too before you sign up because the readings are many and detailed. Discussion sections demand that you have not only done the readings, but also have thoroughly analyzed them. Sometimes seems to expect students to spend every waking moment working on course

Be prepared to work your butt off. There is a lot of reading and you need to be prepared for class. Also the papers take a lot of outside work. Overall, he a really nice guy, easy to talk to and always willing to help.

One of the best professors on campus. His lectures are fun and his seminars are energetic. HeĆ¢€™s extremely organised, clear and knowledgeable about all things Russian. Be warned though, he will make you work your butt off. Expect to do a lot of reading and to work on several tracks at the same time.

Very, very organized lecturer with interesting visuals and provacative topics. Did tend to talk a little bit too fast for notetaking purposes, but overall was engaging and helpful. Led my section and tends to only accept his interpretations of readings.

Great Professor. Very energetic in both lectures and sections. If you take his class, try to get him for section. He is, of course, a Russo-phile. The downside is his classes assign more than the average amount of reading, and classes tend to be at 9 AM.

Incredibly enthusiastic and dedicated to our learning. If you can, take *his* section, not a TA's. I had a TA and was fairly miserable in section - until the day the TA couldn't come and Holquist led the section instead. I learned a lot more that day.
