If you aren't going into a math or science field, this is the class for you. The exams together are only worth 50% of your grade; the rest is online homework, in-class projects, and a book review. Yes, a book review, but don't hate on it yet. It's an easy assignment and the book list he offers has a wide range of interesting topics.

Math is not my strong suit, but Hergert is great at going through examples and answering questions. He doesn't come across as very invested in his students, but he does genuinely want you to do well and makes every effort to help. For 096A, you really get out of the class what you put into it as there are a lot of out-of-class assignments.

Professor Hergert was an amazing teacher. Being someone who is not strong at math this class was very helpful and enjoyable. He is very good at what he does and I would recommend his class to anyone. It's a great beginners course and he is very helpful. Very easy to understand and make it's fun to do math. TAKE THIS COURSE! You won't regret it.

The chapters that he chooses to go over are basic math skills. There were a lot of unnecessary "projects" like measuring things in the room and flipping coins. You do all the homework online. Class is really easy even if you aren't good in math. He is a really nice guy. The only thing that I didn't like was he made us do a book review... in math?

The content of the class already seemed pretty easy to me, & he spent the ENTIRE class period explaining the chapter. There were a lot of unnecessary "projects" like measuring things in the room. He is a very very nice guy and will do anything for his students. I hated the online homework because I would whip through it just to get it done so I would not know the material. Which made tests very hard for me. His class is very dry, but you gotta focus if you want to do well.

If you are illiterate, you will enjoy this class. Hergert's only way to teach is to read the book to you, without actually explaining anything. Unless you are straight out of high school, or a math major, I do not recommend this class. It is hard to follow and completely pointless.

Comment:

Calculus is not an easy subject, especially if you don't really have much interest in it. Mr. Hergert made it a bit bareable, though. Notes and books are a must, homework is worth nothing, but quizzes each week (highly recommend to do homework). Ask questions! He is very helpful and is willing to assist with homework/project. He knows his stuff.

You get easy points if you come to class. He never lets you out on time ALWAYS keeps you late. He goes way into depth on things always giving the history of everything, the class seems to drain your energy it's so boring, never stops talking!

Real nice guy! He explains everything really well and gets to know the students. He'll gladly help you if you ask. Homework was optional so it's pretty much all quizzes, tests, and exams, and a small group project. He adds points for good attendance at the end of the semester! Definitely recommend!

Comment:

This class is not intended for anyone over 30! It's a 'consumer' math course on how to structure & solve number problems, calculate interest, with beginning forays into probability, etc. Great for kids just out of high school but not really a serious math course. Professor Hergert however does a very good job of communicating ideas and methods.
