He's definitely a fairly hard grader, and isn't afraid to critique your writing even though it's a Soc class. He's also a total expert in his field and has a ton of knowledge to share. He's also got a sort of subtle but very aware sense of humor which made lectures a little more bearable.

If you are actually interested in sociology and the literature surrounding the subject you will love this class. Fascinating professor that has an astounding number of published books under his belt. He really is an expert in his field and my favorite professor in the subject so far.

Comment:
Had a LOT of required reading, but nobody did it because he always did a great job of summarizing during class. However, his voice is monotone and it gets boring to listen to really fast. Only 3 papers in the year, and that's what your grade was from. Will give you great feedback and help on your papers IF YOU GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. Was bearable.

Comment:
A class on contemporary American society that skipped over anything contemporary. Much of the 9 person class was absent regularly as lectures were dull and repetitive. Professor Kalberg constantly made jokes about depression and other mental illnesses. If the grade had not been entirely paper based, I would have dropped it and never looked back.

Intelligent and caring teacher. Can seem intimidating, but talk to him in office hours and it will help you a ton!

Loves to hear himself talk but he makes good points while doing so. Class discussion is fairly rare but when it occurs he makes students consider their opinions carefully. His grading is fair - you just have to be organized and thorough.

Lectures are rather dry, but they do get the point across. Listen carefully and his sarcastic sense of humor comes through, and when it does, it's funny.
