Fantastic class. I was immediately impressed by his use of an open-source textbook because, in his words "The expensive ones were just as good and this one is free". Very helpful, and his uses of geeky pop culture earned him huge bonus points. You have to work and study in his class, but it is very do-able and you will learn from it.

Great teacher. He gives out weekly assignments but nothing too hard. His tests are the most difficult part. Study and you should do fine. His lecture/lecture notes make everything easy to follow. I'm definitely taking him again when I get a chance.

Would recommend Difranco to anyone that is taking programing. I would suggest being 5-10 min. early to class. He made the class interesting and will help, you just need to ask. Read the text and class notes for vocab and examples of programs, if you can do that you will be good.

I've read comments that the text wasn't needed, and while technically true, the lecture notes were meant as a SUPPLEMENT to the text, not a replacement. By reading the lecture notes and studying the text, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the course material.

Don't really need the text book. Had him for any class i could. Tests are based off the self study questions, and he does his best to answer any questions you might have. I suggest him for the intro class. He gives you the chance to find out if you would like programming.
