This. Class. Was. Amazing. He was obviously passionate about the subject and it showed. I suppose (as people are complaining about) the reading load was heavy, but nearly everything was from a primary source and just incredibly interesting and, well, amazing. I Looked forward to this class every day and would take it again if I could.

Layher is hot. That is the only reason to take the class. Unless you enjoy a lot of unecessary extra work, finals AND final papers AND final project/presentations, essay rewrites, and mandatory attendance in class beyond the last day of classes (during finals reading week...when you might want to work on all the other work he gave. oh well).

Layher demands a lot, maybe even too much. If you aren't as into what he is teaching as he is, you might have problems.

A lot of assigned reading, most of which you can get by without reading. Layher is really nice and quick to respond to emails. Loves his job, probably the biggest Viking enthusiast I've ever met...but that doesn't say much...

He's a good teacher, but glosses over grammar and expects you to figure it out without help. Also gives a LOT of homework every night. Any class with him is a HUGE time commitment.

The subject matter was boring, but I liked Layher's strategy of applying Viking material to present day. He knows his stuff, a lot about common misperceptions about Vikings. He went to Harvard - the WashU of the East.
