Comment:
An outdated class taught with material that does not correlate to the (absurd) projects. The grading in this class is ridiculous, the amount of work will drive you to insanity, so be ready to fail your other classes. He has no room for any interpretation other than his own. For a school with a forward moving CS program, this guy is five steps back.

His projects do not correlate with what you learn in class, same for the midterm and final. He doesn't explain his syllabus or the projects you work on well by any means and he will actively talk back condescendingly to you for asking questions then not answer the question. Avoid OPL by taking it at NJIT CS280, Miller will allow it but it's 3 cred

Yeah, his classes are tough and he is a tough grader. But, he does that so that we can properly prepare ourselves for further education about the subject. So the choice depends on the student, do they want a teacher who gives them an easy A or do they want someone who will push them harder for the grade.

This guy is the absolute worst. He is the most discouraging professor and does not care about how well you do. If you can teach yourself how to code C++ take him, otherwise I STRONGLY recommend you stay away.

Decent teacher, not the best. Doesn't use textbook so you don't have anything to compare his lecturing to, you just have to do everything his way.

Kumar is easily one of the toughest professors I had. Had him for Comp Sci I. If you miss one class you might as well withdraw because he teaches so much in one class period. Very hard grader and expects you to know everything. Attendance not mandatory grade wise but you're asking for an F if you miss more than one. Would not recommend.

Don't take if you don't already know your stuff. His communication skills via email are 0/5. He expects you to know everything and will not hesitate to let you fail. People who say while he's hard, you'll learn, are fooling themselves. This guy's teaching methods are outdated and insufficient. If you fail the first test drop. Take with someone else

He explains from Day 1 that the class is difficult, and expects many to drop. If you stick with it though you should be fine. The class demands a high amount of attention, and perfect attendance otherwise you cant catch up. He explains everything thoroughly. The assignments(online practice) while helpful, can get incredibly frustrating.

I never took programming or did it and in the beginning I was quite interested in it, but NOW I despise it. He says this class is for beginners, but teaches really fast and doesn't know how to answer questions. He has very little office hours. I am not even a cmps major and am spending the majority of my time on this class. So frustrating.

The way OPL is taught is busted, as the projects and lecture don't correlate much and he expects you to take notes on EVERYTHING he says. Don't bother trying to navigate his site for notes, it's some of the worst website design I've ever seen and it isn't specific at all. You learn a lot from the projects but imo you don't get enough time for them.

I took Kumar for Organization of Programming Languages. I never understood any difficult concepts that the guy taught and the midterm and final were very difficult even when I tried to study. The projects are long but not so bad. However, he does not care about his students at all costs. Stay away from this professor at all costs.

Well, I understand he is very hard. He gives tons of assignments with very less details. If you want to learn some real skills and get a decent job after graduation, you have to take his classes. He is the ONLY professor that makes CS competitive. If you can't pass this class, change your major! Getting a C here is like getting A+ in other classes.

Massive projects due every 2 weeks. Build an entire android app, convert it to 4 languages, etc. Projects are def. exciting and very cool, but the deadlines are not substantial for anyone new to the particular language. Tests have SO MUCH information. 50 pages of class notes + book outlines didn't cut it for the tests.

Professor Kumar is the worst professor I have ever had. He does not care to the least whether you're doing well or not. His method of teaching is by far the least productive that I have seen. You'll dislike any and all of his courses no matter how dedicated, motivated or adroit you maybe in coding. Take ANY other professor, just not Amruth Kumar.

I took this in Fall 2013.. There are awful ratings for this professor, but he gives you good real world examples in class, and helps you if you ask the right questions. If you do not want to try in a course, do not take computer science, it's not easy. If you are not willing to work, do not take this professor. Overall decent.

Its true, Professor Kumar is a very smart man. Like a previous reviewer said, he does treat a class of mostly beginners as if they are experienced programmers. To put it briefly, he does not care at all about the success of his students, and if he does, I am yet to see any gesture of it.

The guy is a genius and treats everyone in the class on his level. His class is impossible I gave up on it and didn't even go to the final. If you don't do the homework 100% correct you get an F so it's either an F or an A. So yea he made me hate computer science for life.
