It has been more than 30 years since I took my first class with Dr. Butterfield- It is good to see his time tested methods have not changed. The reason Dr. B is getting all of these awful ratings is simple: if you want an easy A, stay away from him. If you want to learn, and maybe even struggle a bit, take his class. I have taken 3 classes with him and he was my advisor. I loved him. It's all how you look at things.

I can't believe all of these awful ratings. If you are looking for an easy course, stay away from Dr. Butterfield. If you're looking to learn and be challenged, take him! Very dry, but funny sense of humor. Helpful outside of class. Highly intelligent and one of my favorite profs at PSU!

I can't believe I took 3 courses with him. He is so obnoxious! He is a really hard grader and he also left the class to go to Germany or Ireland the last week of classes without telling us! I promised myself I would never ever take another course with him again! Plus, he is very creepy!

I really enjoyed this class. If you're interested in poetry, I highly recommend taking this class. Dr. Butterfield is great. He makes a lot of witty jokes and he doesn't make you feel dumb for not knowing an answer. Just do your work, listen to his advice, and you'll be fine.

Dr. B was one of my favorite teachers. He expects something of his students which is why some people disliked him. His classes helped me when I went on to graduate school and the real world. Taking his classes teaches you things you NEED to know--like proper grammar and how to write to-the-point. Many other English teachers just let you get away with not knowing these things because they are lazy or don't care. Dr. B is a teacher that will change the way you write and the way you look at writing.
