Comment:

Fairly easy! Get the online textbook because there are quizzes every week and the online book makes it easier to find the answers. She's a fair grader and this class only took about an hour each week. Also, an 89 is an A in her class, so that's always nice.

Comment:

Very easy and interesting class. The readings were a little weird but overall enjoyable. Same routine every week: read two stories, write about them and take the quizzes. Only gives you 5 minutes to do the quizzes though so you really have to read the stories and the author's biographical info before the story. She quizzes that too! Not a bad class

Horrible professor and a horrible person. She makes no qualms about her dislike of undergraduates even if they are honor students. Vastly unprofessional. I can see why she was given a position in administration - to be kept away from the classroom and students!

I had this class "highly blended." It was basically completely online, but you had to take the only test during the class period. Not a lot of direction, but I kind of liked that. You have to be sure to keep up with the reading and the syllabus to post to the forums while they're open. It was easy and some of the books we read were interesting.

The online class was simple & easy for me. The tests r open book multiple choice & overall i found her 2 b a fair grader. I never had a problem w/her & my grade was an A. Take her class over Haskell bcuz he'll bore u for hours. Shes a no-nonsense woman but i liked that & i guess thats y the class was so simple. id take her again if i had the chance

I took UI332 online because I had to. The class isn't really difficult, but Scates doesn't make it easy. She is not easy to access through email and often acts like she doesn't have the time for her students. Sometimes she is just not helpful at all. If you ask her a question, she will respond with something totally off the wall...kind of weird

Linguistics was not my favorite class. The blended online format was a pain; there was a very limited time limit during which we had to be online. I only saw Dr. Scates at the two in-class meetings, and she seemed a little rude, almost resentful. She didn't give much direction, especially with the one big paper. It was an online class, though.

Dr. Scates is tough, but willing to help if you ask. I've had her for just about every class she teaches, and she may favor the grad students a bit, but overall, she's clear in her expectations and standards. The classes won't be easy, but you'll be better for taking them if you put effort in.

Love this teacher. She is one of the few who truly cares about helping the students learn, instead of just giving them grades. Most teachers let you coast on by; she really makes sure you are learning something.

OMG, tell me about it. I have her for a class that's half live, half Web. Dying a slow death is a perfect description. She's very smart and means well, but she doesn't relate well with nonacademics or undergrads at all. She behaves as though her class is the only thing going on in our lives.

i have had every class dr. scates teaches and have been the better for it. she is a exceptional instructor, in knowlegde and application, and is one of the objective grader i have ever had. many students fear her, but such students are not rising to the challenge and are passing a great opportunity!
